Wortley District
« on: Wednesday 10 May 06 05:33 BST (UK) »
I'm going through the Births, Marriages and Death Indexes on the Ancestry site and I have lost the district of Wortley.  Does anyone know if there was a realignment and Wortley district became something else.  The last indication I had of Wortley was in 1930 after that, nothing.

Thanks

The list at GenUKI  shows Wortley as a Registration District until 1974:

http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/wortley.html

I took a randomly selected date (Births MAR 1940) and found the occasional registration in Wortley. So I think it is a case of a relatively low population rather than an administrative change.

Hugh

Thanks for the information.  I had gone to 1955 in the family I'm looking at and had not found any names.

Again Thanks

The page describing the Wortley district is now at https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/wortley.html

You can find out more about Wadsley at the Vision of Britain site - http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/21701

By following the links of Vision of Britain, especially those relating to historical units and their relationships, it looks to me as though Wadsley was part of the civil parish of Ecclesfield, so whichever district Ecclesfield was in, Wadsley will have been too.

It seems a bit odd, though: from the information about registration districts (see first link, then explore other districts via the County link) it appears that in 1838 Ecclesfield parish was moved from the Ecclesfield registration district to Wortley. The Ecclesfield district continued until it was further split up and abolished in 1850.

Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

All the following from GenUKI:

"WADSLEY, in the township and parish of Ecclesfield, upper-division of Strafforth and Tickhill; 3 miles NW. of Sheffield, on the left of the Manchester road.

This was formerly the seat of the knightly family of Wadsley, who held their estate here, by the name of a manor of the great Baron at Sheffield Castle; and they had at Wadsley, a Hall, a Park, and domestic Chapel, which were not wholly destroyed in the reign of Elizabeth, but of which, now only the names remain. --Hunter's Hallamshire."

Ecclesfield Registration District was created on 1st July 1837.
On 1st October 1838, the parish of Ecclesfield (including Wadsley) was transferred to the new Wortley Registration District.

Just a point of interest, there are 2 Wortley villages as places - 1 near Penistone/Sheffield area having its own BMD registration district till 1974 and 1 near Leeds that came under Leeds BMD registration district to present day.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
