birth certificate - james wilson
« on: Wednesday 31 May 06 20:21 BST (UK) »
I have been searching for James Wilson (my grandfather) for some time now and finally I must admit to needing some help.   He names Renfrewshire Paisley (1901 census) as his birthplace but to date I cannot find any reference to him (his father was James Wilson/Mother Margaret Gillon.  These names appear clearly  on his wedding certificate but on his death certificate his father is called John Wilson.

He married Helen Jones 1894 in Bathgate Linlithgowshire and had the following children:-

Helen Reid Jones (Wilson)      b.1893 illigitimate  -  Moonzie Fife
John Wilson                            b.1895  -  Pumpherston Mid Lothian
Robert Jones Wilson               b.1896  -  Pumpherston Mid Lothian
Alfred Anderson Sangster Wilson b.1897 - Bathgate Linlithgowshire
Isabella Waugh Jones Wilson       b.1899 - Bathgate Linlithgowshire
Elizabeth Wilson                           b.1907 - Blackston, Avonbridge, Stirlingshire

My grandfather died in 1955 (aged 82yrs)

I have been following the middle names given to this family and have found Reid, Anderson and Sangster in the Auchterless Aberdeen area on the Fathers Side.
Waugh I found on the mothers side (Ireland)

I do hope someone out there can give me a helping hand - I feel really stuck on this one.

Hi,

Have you found the marriage for James Wilson & Margaret Gillon  ???
Where were their places of birth recorded as per 1901 census.

Does the age (yr of birth) for James Jnr (your grandfather) tally up on all records you have  ???

It may be that he was born prior to his parents marriage  ???

Just some thoughts.

Given the lack of an obvious birth entry for James in this period under the surname of Wilson, as Annie mentions above, it could well be that your James was born illegitimate to mother Margaret Gillon.

This period as I am sure you know is a good time to search on Family Search birth indexes. James seems to show a birth year of c.1872-3?

There is one entry showing on FS for a birth at the end of 1871:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYT1-6Z4

There are a couple of other births for a James born to a Margaret Gillon, but in the 1860s.

With the reference to Row in Dunbartonshire, there is this possible census entry for 1871 (which would have been just before the birth of the James born late 1871:

Rose Gillon 75 b. Ireland
Margaret Gillon 30 b. Ireland
Mary Brown 41visitor b. Ireland
James Cassey 30 lodger b. Ireland
Richard Marshall 60 lodger b. Ireland
David Crawford 35 lodger b. Ireland
Henry Matholane 48 lodger b. Ireland

Address: 41 James St, Helensburgh, Row

How have you been able to trace back to the Father's side and important surnames used by James and Helen?

Hi Monica  -  sorry about the delay in replying.
I believe the James Wilson (1891 census) living with the Warrington family is the on I am looking for.
I have already researched the possibility of illegitimacy and I also found the Margaret Gillon in Row,
Dunbartonshire with a son James Gillon   -   but I found a death certificate for the infant James Gillon (aged 1) 1873.
The only other information I have recently dug up are James Wilson and Helen's  children's birth certificates and the addresses where they were born.
So once again - a brick wall.

Sorry, repeating myself!

Hallo Annie and Monica
I never found a marriage for James Wilson to Margaret Gillon and the ages for James seem to tally on the census' (also place of birth).  All say Renfrewhire Paisley.
1911 census gives their home as Glenelrig Lodge, Slamannan, East Stirlingshire but only Isabella (11) and Elizabeth (3) are with their parents there.  (update on Elizabeth - she was in fact Born at 20 Forthview, Wallyford, Musselburgh, near Edinburgh in 1907).   How do I find out who lived at this address?
I did look under the name Gillon some time ago - Margaret Gillon (Row) and child James I found death certificates for them.
I have not found John nor Robert on 1911 census - Helen went to Greenock for nurse training.
Thank you for your contact - I do really appreciate all the help I can get.

Can you provide the details from the marriage you found for a James Wilson and Margaret Gillon here. As you know, everything helps.

Re who lived at 20 Forthview, Wallyford, Musselburgh in 1907, best source of info would be from the Valuation Rolls. SP have 1905 online (slowing adding more years). People moved around so much in these times, you might need a local search (to Wallyford, Musselburgh archives) for the specific year of 1907.

Hi Monica
Never found a marriage for James wilson/Margaret Gillon - only got info from marriage cert for James wilson and Helen Jones showing parents names - parents of James wilson shown as James wilson and Margaret Gillon.  (Bathgate 1894)
However death certificate for James Wilson (born c1872) gives father as JOHN wilson (wool warehouse packer).  (1955 avonbridge)
Did find a John Wilson - wool packer - in Dumbartonshire but no son James.
