Isabella's marriage shows on IGI in 1850:

ISOBEL SHERRET  Marriages: Spouse: WILLIAM BURNESS
Marriage:  21 JUL 1850  Benholm, Kincardine, Scotland

The only entry that come close on FreeCen is:

SHERRET       Isabella       F       15       Female Servant        Aberdeenshire        Newhills

This Isabella as you can see is showing an Aberdeenshire birth place and she is working the Lindsay household.

Hi Monica
Right marriage but not sure about the census.  Will check my info.
Can I ask you one other question - there was a William Sherret born approx 1823 not on the 1841 census. Now they had another son born 1843 called William - I suspect that the first William died - can you check in any way?

It's likely that William Jnr was working already away from home. There are three entries in FreeCen for William Sheret x 2 aged 15 and Wllm Sheret aged 14, all with Kincardineshire birth places. Have a look at the results yourself, you might recognise some names in the individual households.

In case you haven't searched on the 1841 Census before, ages for children under 15 are supposed to be accurate. Over 15 and the enumerator was supposed to round down to the nearest 5. So, William b. 1823 should show as age 15. Use this as a guide, apart from the variances on ages on Censuses, not all enumerators followed these instructions.

Hi BoBo,

There were no Sherrets in the 1851 or the 1861 Fettercairn Census but the 1861 Fordoun Census has this:-

Mains of Glenfarquhar
Wm Sherret   64   Farmer 200 acres b. Fetteresso
Isobel Stephen 65 Wife                    b. Fordoun
Isobel Sherret (U) 33 Dau.                b. Fettercairn
Elizabeth  "      (U) 28   "                   b.         "
Elsie         "      (U) 26   "                   b.         "
James       "      (U) 26 Son                b.         "
Jane         "      (U) 24  Dau.              b.         "
Robert Collie    (U) 22  Ploughman    b. Bervie
John Linn         (U) 15  Horseman     b. Dumbarton
Chas.Robertson (U) 18 Cattleman    b. Dunnottar
Mary Stephen, Lodger 6 Scholar   b. Fetteresso

You'll notice that the enumerator has entered the maiden surname of William's wife.  Elsie is another form of Alice, but I couldn't make out if the seventh person is Jane or Jessie.
I reckon the family to be as follows:-

Wm. Sherret married Isobel Steven at Fordoun on 14 Dec 1822.  Children:-

         Isabella     17 Jan 1825
       Alexander    24 Aug 1826
             Sarah    15 Aug 1828
           Joseph     26 Apr 1830
        Elizabeth    26 Feb 1833
             James    20 Nov 1833
               Alice     20 Nov 1833 (Twins)
             Jessie     10 Jul 1836
               Jane     08 Jun 1838
           William     13 Jun 1843

I couldn't trace the 1823 William you mentioned, but there's a William born 21 Apr 1821, christened 16 Nov 1822, to Robert Sheret & Margaret Christie
at Fettercairn. Perhaps, as you say, the first William died at birth and was never christened.

Hi Isles
Thank you so very much for your information.  This is exactly the family I was looking for and I am grateful for everything you have found out for me.

I must say that the William Sherret you found seems very interesting.  Firstly I have not found a Robert Sherret in the tree so he's an unknown and secondly, could that William be the one I am looking for?  Always more questions

Thanks again for everything you have done.  It was really kind of you to do this even after my silly mistake of muddling up the surnames.

Hi BoBo,

I feel you can discount the Robert Sherret as one of William & Isobel's family; nothing comes up on the I.G.I.
I think I've also managed to discount the Williams mentioned by Monica:

William Sherrat b. Jan 1825 Fordoun. Parents: Alexander Sherrat & Elspet Taylor.
William Sheret b. 31 Jul 1825 Bervie. Parents:
David Sheret & Christian Gavine.

If there was another William born about 1823 to William & Isobel, he may have died at birth and hence unbaptised.  If so, there is just a chance that he's mentioned in the Fettercairn deaths (or rather the hires of the mortcloth) which run from 1721 to 1854.  Next time I'm in Stonehaven I'll check the O.P.R.
By the way, my great-great grandmother was an Ann Sherret born here in Bervie but I think I can safely say there are not a few of the surname in Kincardineshire !!

Isles.
