From census records, I have managed to trace the following:

A William WAUGH was born c.1797 in Orton, Cumberland (UK) and went on to marry a lady called Mary (maiden name unknown) who was born in Scotland in 1798. They went on to have to children together who were born in Carlisle.

Now, I'm hoping to trace these back further.

How can I obtain Mary's surname? What records could I look at? Likewise, how can I trace back William WAUGH's parents?

Were any kids born after 1837? a birth cert will give the maiden surname.

Unfortunately not. The census records show two daughters, both born 1825 and 1835 respectively.

Hi

I went on to the LDS site and found the following

William Waugh baptised 5 Feb 1797 at St Giles, Great Orton, Cumberland, England
Parents - George Waugh and Mary Scott

The batch no is P001931 and gives various other Waughs all baptised in the same church.
