Dadds born in Buttevant
« on: Tuesday 26 October 04 20:05 BST (UK) »
Hello all, can anybody help a newbie.
Grandfather Harold John Charles Dadds born 1/11/1892 in Buttevant, Co Cork.
I cannot find record of his birth.
I know his father Henry John was in 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment based in Buttevant from April 1891.
Where would H.J.C's birth records be ?.  Local or Army records ?

Glad to have an Irish link , however tenuous and look forward to some advice.

Hi,

The birth should have been registered in the birth indexes. If you haven't searched them already. they are available on film in your local family history centre.

Kate,
Thanks for replying but I am confused. Live in East Anglia and have looked all through 1837 online to find birth. Not there as far as I can see and the reason for my query.
Are you saying the birth will be in the local records for Buttevant even though likely to be member of British Army in Barracks ?.
If so how do I go about tracking down ?

Sorry if I'm acting thick

Hi Terry,

I don't think that English births in Ireland were registered in England. They were the same country at the time so they should be in the Irish records. The indexes are in the GRO n Dublin and on film in your local family history centre.

There's more information on how to get started on my website.

Good Luck

Kated,

Thanks for your info and from your website i now know what a Family History Centre is.
The only trouble seems to be that if i am reading your website correctly, an FHC will not have details of a birth in Cork in 1892.
Looks like i might need to come back to you for some more professional help.

Terry,

What you could find is one or more possible Harold Dadds born in 1892 ish but you're right, those ten years the FHC in Dublin at least, don't have the birth register entries on film so you have to buy a copy from the GRO in Dublin.

Let me know what you think.
