I wondered if anyone can give me any advice about what kind of records may or may not have been kept during the later parts of the 19th century in India. I am trying to help a friend trace her family who appear to have been native Indians but who have British military connections. Her G'G'father although Indian was a surgeon in the Indian Medical Service which I suspect was no mean feat for an Indian. Anyway we have his military records but would really like to find out about his marriage and the birth of his son whom we find aged 8 in London in the 1901 census, apparently following the death of his mother. Would an army man have had to seek permission to marry I wonder? Did the British keep any kind of BMD information in India pertaining to their own and those who worked for them?
I can't be the only person looking for this kind of information in India and I'm sure someone out there has the knowledge !! Any help welcome, thanks in advance
