John smith , the tailor
« on: Sunday 30 July 06 00:58 BST (UK) »
does anyone know of a John Smith born around 1821 Roxburgh, married to Jane ?? .  Children include William, Robert S, Christina, John, and Janet. found on 1851 census, Edinburgh.  William, Robert, and John born in England.  I think this set are the parents for my Christina Smith born 1849 and married James Duncan 1868 Glasgow.   Any help appreciated.   Donna

Have you obtained the marriage record off the website: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

It will narrow down your search for correct parents.

Kind regards

I was going to suggest that. The ref for their marriages is Vol 644-7 Page 8 .
John Smith (tailor) is indeed her father and her mother was Jane Mains.

Thank you both so much; if this is the one , another  brick down.  On the marriage cert for daughter Christina the last name is unreadable.   again, thank you.   Donna

Hi Donna!

You are more than welcome! Really, the hat is off to Gadget for getting you a correct reference number.  ;D

If you need any help with deciphering the surname on the marriage entry, why don't you try and scan the part where you are having a trouble with?

We may be able to help you out.

OR you can try and get her death record using all the surnames to identify a correct death entry on her.

Just drop a line to let us know.

All the best

The surname, as I read it ,was Mains or Mays, I believe as I said in my previous posting. I'll put it up below for you all to read.

Another look - it might be Major. Think I'll put it up on the Common Room board

Hi Donna

I would have to agree with Gadget that it is either Mains or Mays. I am inclined to the surname of Mains.

Or Major...but it does not look like that.

The only way to confirm this is to get the death entry on Christina to make sure what was her maiden surname. Or her siblings' marriage/death entries.

(as posted in the Common Room earlier) It looks more like like "Marine" to me. I thought it was "Maline" at first but the "l" in tailor is nothing like the letter in question in this word. I hadn't come across "Marine" as a surname before but a quick search on ancestry reveals quite a few people of that name.
