Orphanages

My ggg grandfather was born in Tynehead just below the Scotish Border, we have found his birth certificate minus any parental details, therfore I am assuming that he was Orphaned or abandoned as a baby in 1758.
Where would I find the relevant information on orphanages at that time? it's possible that he went to an orphanage in Either Cumberland/Northumberland/Roxburhshire/dumfries.
