I remember when I was young that the "County" was always considered quite posh but in its later years it became much more run of the mill.

I used to go to the County with my parents late 50`s early 60`s.I seem to remember the owner had a St Bernard dog that had the habit of lying down by the door,big draught excluder ::)

i worked as a commis chef at this hotel 1977-1978 before moving to the Cale edinburgh it was a fantastic year and i have always retained a warm regard and feelings for the town of Ayr the manageresses were a Mrs Rudge and a Mrs Hopkinson immaculate dignified and very posh (i thought) ladies

I feel the need to chime in and say how nice I think this row now looks. Whoever did the renovations/conversion seems to have done an excellent job.

I would say that this may have originally been a row of houses (inhabited by the wealthy), then obviously converted to a hotel, and now back to more how they would have originally looked, albeit turned into flats.  :)
