1851 census Frances GREEN either NBL or DUR?
« on: Monday 21 August 06 08:33 BST (UK) »
I am looking for Frances GREEN born about 1830 or 1832

She is on the 1841 census at a farm at Spittle NBL
She is on the 1861 census at Ryton village DUR houskeeper to her uncle Ralph

She is possibly a dau of Ralph and Mary Ann GREEN, farmers.

I have the census CDs for NBL and DUR but cannot find her in the usual places so need a clue.

Thanks Gen List Lass

You say you have Frances in the 1841 and 1851 census.
Wouldn't she have married and be Frances something else in later censuses?

She never married, she is on the later census with her son who was an illigitimate child of my GG gandfather.

I can't see her in Crawcrook in 1851. How do you know she was there?  ???

Also, what's her birthplace on later census? Did she have any middle name she could go by?

Hi Tati

I have modified my original request.

I made a mistake on my first query. It was her illegitimate son who was at Castle Hill Farm in 1861, she was in the nearby Ryton village in 1861 as housekeeper to her uncle Ralph Green.

I still havent found her anywhere on the 1851 census either in NBL or Co.DUR

Genlist wants a clue to whereabouts of Frances Green on Census1851.

Here are some clues, most of them bad.....

It soundsas if you have all her "steps" through the censuses with the exception of 1851... showing her to be..

born Spittle ( not the Spittle, then Spittal, close to Berwick)

between 1828-1832

with unmarried uncle Ralph Green on C1861

A grocer on C1871

unmarried

with son Frederick, born c1857 ( where was he on C 1861 ? )

So here is a clue to C1851 > Remember Confucius says, or was it Oliver Twist ?, that anything is better than nothing....

In Gilesgate, Durham City, in the packed house of a GROCER, is a 23 yr old Frances Green. (2391-174-56)

Now bear in mind the head of the house has to give all the info on all his residents to the census enumerator... let's hope heads were always accurate !!

Frances ( the Ancestry transcription has her as FRANCA) is classified as a "married" lodger. There is also another
" married" lodger... Magnus Green, born Shetland.

Also a Newcastle-born 3 yr old Margaret Green.

Frances's birth place is recorded as  BERWICK...

Now your Frances was born a long way away from Berwick... but did the Durham City enumerator incorrectly enter Berwick, after been told that her birth place was Spittle
( Many early enumerators recorded "parish of birth", rather than "place of birth")

Confucius would call all this " clutching at straws"

Over to you.

Thanks for your input Michael.

She was definitely born at Spittle near Whittonstall, which is near the Co DUR border with NBL. All her family and relations are around there in 1841 and long before, another branch at Ovingham area NBL.

I have her son Fredrick b. about 1857, on every census and a strange baptism with another unmarried mothers name. In further census when her child was with her, she gives various birthplaces and ages but always unmarried.

He was with his grandmother and single, presumed father on the 1861 census at Castle Hill farm, Co Dur.

I cannot copy all the census transcripts I have for her as this programme wont allow me to cut and paste. *(Copyright?)
