Help wanted - Demery Family Cork 1857-1875
« on: Saturday 02 September 06 16:07 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I have a Marriage of a James Demery to a Rebecca Hardie in Queenstown Cork in 1857. It is understood that neither of them was born in Ireland but came from the West of England.

They had the following children

Rebecca Mary 1864, Mary 1867, James 1870, Jessie Conception 1872, Albert Victor 1873 & Josephine Theresa 1875.

The problem is that after that they disappear altogether as I can find no records of them in either Ireland or back in England.

There is a possibility that the family may have gone to the USA but have been unable to trace them there either.

Is there anyone out there who can offer me assistance with this family as I seem to have come to a dead end.

Would there be any records of marriages etc or ship lists? and where would I find them?

Many thanks,
Rich

Rich,

Just a thought - try the 'colonies', i.e. Australia, South Africa, etc.

Emigration from England was actively encouraged (financial inducement) in the 1870s. My great-grandparents emigrated to Natal, where they lived for nearly twenty years.

Hi Rich
I'm new on RootsChat.com. I was looking for Mary Demery and found your E-Mail. I have a relative named Ludwig Rüetschi, born 21 September 1868 in Aarau/Switzerland who married Mary Demery from Queenstown/Ireland . The date of the marriage 15 Apr 1893 in Melbourne, Australia. Is this perhaps "Your" Mary Demery in your E-Mail?
With best regards
Silvana from Switzerland
(Sorry my English is very bad...)

Welcome to Rootschat, Silvana. You English is very, very good so don't worry about posting on here but unfortunately Rich who started this thread hasn't been online since 2007 (hopefully they will get notification of your post and make contact again).

Hi Rich,

Just saw your post today.  I was in Cobh(Queenstown) last week and visited the Old Church Cemetery - where there are memorials to the Lusitania victims and came across three headstones in one section for Demery.  I think it is the family you are looking for.
I have photos of the three if you want to send me a PM with your email address I can send them to you.  Also some nice picturesf of Cobh and Spike Island if you want.

Three Headstones -
1.
Erected by William Demery in memory of his children
Thomas d Feb 20 1843, aged 2 years,
Andrew Demery  d Mar 27th 1854 aged 5 years
Hannorah Demery d. Mar 31st 1851 aged 7 years
2.
Erected by James Demery in memory of his mother
Mary Demery who departed this life March 20th 1865 aged 60
also his father William d June 26 1885 aged 72 years
3.
Erected by James Demery in loving memory of his daughter Rebecca Mary who departed this life ?  28th 1886 aged 22 years.
????  Young
Mary    James   Albert    Victor

They are the three inscriptions.  I am almost certain these are your ancestors.

I look forward to hearing from you

Mary
