If you want to have a good idea of the hardships, etc. of the Byrne Settlers, then get hold of a copy of Dear Louisa - letters between sister's, one a Byrne settler, the other in London.  It is a wonderful insight into early Settler life.  I visited Byrne in February, and saw Ellen McLeod's grave.



Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

A lot of Byrne settlers lived in York Natal. I took video footage of what is left of the town and the cemetery in December. This can be seen on the Natal Midlands group on FB. My Smith family came from Bedale in England on the Haidee.
Austin, Ayling, Alborough, Bescoby, Cheal, Groom,Rathbone,Tarboton,Lyell and Smith.
