1851 census help
« on: Tuesday 09 November 04 04:07 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for some help/guidance about 1851 census. After spending countless hours tracing (old) family members
I have come across a query;in the census it shows a person (Clarence) Beattie living at Barrand 870 with family.
After "trying" to track him down I find his name was NOT Clarence but Ebenezer, also find that sister Jane was living at
Barrand 870 .Census states that she is son of William;I have been looking for a James, could this be the same person
Have been on to Scotslandpeople (GROS) site and there is NO James ever listed for that period of time (1848-1848)
But according to his father death certificate James was at his side when he died.

Could some "please" try to explain this situation to me

Thanks
Baldy

Hiya,

The birth you are looking for pre-dates statutory registration.  The OPR record may not have survived or he may not have been baptised.  Not finding him on Scotlandspeople is not unusual pre-1855.

Do you have other census info e.g. 1841?

All the best,
Pam

I have access to all the films for Dumfries at my local library.  I went tonight and it will be a while before I get there again but if you let me know what look ups you want done and where I'll do them as soon as I can  :)

Is it household 2/32 on teh 1851?  It looks like they were in Troqueer in 1841 going by the births of the children I have access to that so I'll have a gander.

All the best,
Pam

Hiya Baldy,

My first trip to the library of the year and I found this...

OPR Film: 870/2 Kirkbean

1848
Ebenezer son lawful of William Beattie and Janet Callandeer born 17th baptized 21st January by the Rev Mr Grierson

I think the fact that the name in 1851 is in square brackets means they couldn't read it properly.

I had the Troqueer film out and found the family...

1841

Troqueer ED1 page 6

Martingirth

Janet Beattie 30   Y
James            7   Y
Isabella         6   Y
Mary               4  Y
Robert            2   Y
Janet              7m  Y

(Y being born in county)

William isn't in the house as he is a ploughman I reckon he will be working away as it is a later census than later years.

Hope this helps,
Pam

Hello Pam.
Thank you for that Information.
That was exactly what I was looking for about Ebenezer.
The actual fact that he was originally given the name as Clarence in some
census confirms that it was a "total" mistake.

Would it be possible for you to let me know when you next intend to visit the library
I may (if I could) have another lookup.

Kindest Regards

Not sure when I will get there again but please feel free to request the look up - if it is a different family then start a new thread and I will put it in my note book.

I'm moving house at the end of this week so it may be a while or I may find myself passing the library and I can pop in.  Can't promise though.

Hi Pam.
It is for the same family;I am no desperate hurry for 'any'; information whatso ever.

Information required is on Isabella BEATTIE DOB 1835,am looking to see if and when
and to who she married.Parents were Thomas Beattie & Janet Callander.

I hope that all goes well for you in the house moving project.

If this is before 1855 I need to know where you think she was married because all the OPRs in Edinburgh library are on film.  Happy to scroll through a known parish though.

Alternatively it should come up on Scotlandspeople and I could get the detail from the film.

Pam
