Dawkin Lodge near Llanelly
« on: Friday 13 October 06 14:49 BST (UK) »
An ancestor of mine wrote the following on the fly-leaf of her New Testament:

"Elizabeth Morgans
Dawkin Lodge
Near Llanelly
Carmarthenshire
February 9th 1869"

My guess us that Elizabeth was employed as a servant at Dawkin Lodge but I cannot find any references to it.  Can anyone provide any information, iincluding the exact location? And does it feature in any of the local Census returns?  Any information gratefully received!

Have found it in 1851 Dawkins Lodge ,Llanelly,
Henry Foster,Head,37,? in Pottery,Chiltern Berks
and wife Elizabeth age 24.

Dawkins Lodge seems to be in the middle of New Road,Llanelly near Ciffig Cottage .
Will have a look if i can find it in the later census returns

Best Wishes Welsh Lady

Dear Welsh Lady,

Many thanks indeed for this useful information. I've had a look at the Census entry and think that the occupation of Henry Foster was "presser".

However, I haven't worked out the link (if any) between 'Elizabeth Morgans' and 'Elizabeth Foster' and wonder whether a different family was resident in Dawkins Lodge by 1869.   Elizabeth was possibly my great-great-grandmother as her entry appears in a Welsh New Testament passed down by Ann Morgans, my great-grandmother [MORGANS was her maiden name and she married  Thomas EVANS in 1887].  The family settled first in Burry Port and later in Abercynon.

If you do happen to trace Dawkins Lodge in later Census returns I would be most interested to hear.

Best Wishes,  Ken Milton

Hi Ken

Just doing some housekeeping - have you made any progress with this?

You should be able to search the 1881 census by address (free in Ancestry)

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thanks for the enquiry: nothing further to add to the info provided by Welsh Lady, although she has provided great help in locating my Carmarthenshire Morgans and Evans ancestors in the 1881 Census.

No progress at all on the Miltons of Merionethshire, I fear (following my postings about these). No doubt the search will keep me busy during the New Year!

Best Wishes for 2007.
