FAIR(E)Y Hunts to McLean & Baysville
« on: Wednesday 18 October 06 04:29 BST (UK) »
Kia Ora
I have the excerpt from a book held by the Baysville LIbrary.
This states
"Mr Fairy with his wife and 2 small children came to Canada from Hunts around 1867. Shortly afterwards they went to Michigan where his wife's family lived but the following year his wife died.
"..... He married Mrs Crombie a widow with 2 children and the family lived for a time in Toronto.

Now the crunch!

"In 1873 he & his brother  located land in in McLean TWP Lots 19 & 20 , Concessions 4 & 5 200 acres each. His brother did not stay long and in 1875 his location was taken over Joseph Bell and in 1876 by Mrs Bell."

Where do I go to find out the name of the other brother please?  Presumably there is a chance of Deeds of Sale or similar for the original purchase and the resale to the Bells , being available??

In case anyone is familiar with the area son George bought  the property from his father Thomas. It was situated on the south branch of the Muskoka River a couple of miles from the Village.  George sold the property to Dr Haltz of Windsor and several cottages have been built there.
Grateful for any hints!

Kia Ora Marlene,

In Ontario we have a Land Registry System wherein anything that happens to a property such as purchase, sale, easements, etc. is registered on title.  Since you have the Lot and Concession, that is all you need.  I'm not sure if the Muskoka Registry Office is still on the old system, or if they have gone to the knew one, (I used to do real estate law) but you should be able to get a copy of the abstract of title which will tell you who bought the land.  I recently got a copy of the title for my family for 1847.  I have a friend who does real estate law still, so I can give her a call and find out if Muskoka is still on the old system.  It would cost $8.00 Canadian to get a copy.

That's a great idea, Marlene...You can find out for sure which family he came from that way...although it still won't help find that elusive William!  :D  J.J.

Thanks Karen - that sounds just what I need to identify the "other brother" . As far as I can tell all the boys were back in England by 1881 so that will be my only hope realistically.
Will I be able to pay by  credit card? I have real trouble with some local records in England as they don't have the facility! Means  that in the case of a birth cert costing NZ $21 I also have to buy a a Sterling cheque costing NZ$25  which could otherwise be another cert. Very frustrating!

Keeping my fingers crossed JJ. From the article it seems "other members of the family were William, Elizabeth & Arretta".

I know Eliza was deceased & Arretta was busy having about 12 kids so it's 50/50 as to whether William was dead or alive!
George, Lucy. Hannah all rate a mention but not Sarah Ann!
Thanks again
Marlene

Hi Dale,

I spoke with the Registry Office for Muskoka, and they do have the title books there, so you would be able to find out who purchased the property in 1873.  The people who work at the Registry Office won't do it, you have to hire someone to go and look it up for you  ::)

Here are some links that might help. Hopefully you will find someone in the Muskoka area willing to do lookups.

(Although there is no one from the Muskoka Region, there is one person from Toronto willing to do some research for Muskoka. Might be worth a try.)

"These Our Ancestors Were"a book documenting the cemeteries and tombstones of Muskoka and Parry Sound. The book is supposed to be on file at the Huntsville Library. Possibly someone could look this up.
