Help please ...........
« on: Monday 30 October 06 18:16 GMT (UK) »
Please can anybody help me before the men in the white suits cart me off ;D

Will try and make story short

Been looking for my great grandmother Priscilla Gander born 1873 Liverpool is stated as place as birth on census 1891, by 1901 she is married to g grandad John Stephenson.  In 1891 she is a visitor to the Andrews family in Middlesbrough, she actually worked at Ingleby Greenhouse at the manor house.  On her marriage cert it is definitely Gander, but I have now found this on the IGI

PRISCILLA GANDY BORN 25TH DEC 1873 LINTHORPE(MIDDLESBROUGH)
BAPTIZED 20TH MARCH 1884
FATHER JAMES (SAME AS MARRIAGE CERT APART FROM IT DOES SAY GANDER ON CERT)
MOTHER HANNAH

Can anybody see this family anywhere at all in 1881, would imagine Middlesbrough - Linthorpe area in North Yorks

I was told that she was sent to live with a family member called Noble as she was left as a orphan

Please please please can you help me at all

Is it possible that Priscilla was the daughter of Hannah, but not of James?  There is a long gap between birth (1873) and Baptism (1884).

I have found a Priscilla Whitling, Born Middlesborough 1874, with a  mother on her own (but not shown widowed) called Hannah Whitling. They were at 4 West St, Middlesborough - Hannah was shown as aged 42 born Thirsk.  There were other children of Hannah's - Michael Harland Aged 22, Steam Crane Driver, Born Thirsk; John Whitling Age 14 Watchmaker's apprentice, Born Bedale; James Whitling Age 12 Born Middlesborough; William Whitling Age 8 Born Closehouse, Durham; Minnie Whitling Age 3 Born Middlesborough; and also an Isabella Herbert age 14 Domestic Servant.

Census Reg is RG11/4847, Middlesborough District 7, Page 12.

You'll no doubt have a feeling in your bones as to whether this adds up (or not, which is probably the more likely).

:) And just to stir things up a little.....

                  Gandy Priscilla b Chorlton O/N/D/   8c 722

i'm now on the lookout for a Gandy family living Chorlton way in 1871.

                                        cheryle.f ;D

When i checked the 1873/72/74 births there are not any Gander children being born anywhere near that part of the country. It seems that all the Ganders in the country are down this end and up only as far as London. Where as all the Gandys are up North and none down this end.

I think I know them all personally ;D  I spent another 4 hours yesterday looking for a Priscilla born in Liverpool or Middlesbrough that may fit the bill, If only I knew the full story :(

I am going to go to our local RO today to see if I can find a parish register for the one I found on the IGI
