Hi again Megan,
I have just come from the library. There is no death in SA for John William SAVAGE....Added to that no remarriage nor the birth of any children to a remarriage or relationship in SA. You have family stories that he remarried so I feel it must have been interstate. There is just no further record of the man in SA.
JOHNSON Bridget Elizabeth 71 Widow of Brompton d 27 May 1943 at Brompton Dist Hin 664 2758 Rel Henry JOHNSON deceased husband
this looks like the most likely for Henry. Age at first marriage suggest birth 1870, age at second marriage suggests a birth 1872. This suggests a birth about 1866. Croydon is the next suburb to Brompton and there are no other Henry Johnson's around the right age
JOHNSON Henry 69 Mar of Croydon died 24 Jun 1935 Croydon Dist Hin 570 2331
Now I did have a bit of a scan of loacal marriage certs and the earliest I noticed were papers that were sent out to local offices listing local divorces and stating this must be added to original cert. These were divorces from a later period. relating to marriages in the 20's (marriage act 1936-1945 was quoted.) These entries have been added to the certs and appear at the top of the page something like
marriage dissolved by supreme court on (Date) signed by registrar In the earlier marriages I didn't notice any relating to Divorce only name changes. Being a country area I feel divorce would have been less common here than in the city.
I am sorry I have no knowledge of if or where records of divorce or legally declared dead would be. I would suggest you ring the Registar and ask what the procedure was then and will any details have been added to these marriage certs. I would be interested to hear what they have to say.
