Hi Isobel, thanks for your last two posts.
I feel that my original post has become somewhat confusing so perhaps I should start at the beginning.
I have traced my family back to my GGGG grandfather Samuel Porritt born c1809. I have been unable to confirm his birth and hence find details of his parents. I do have his death certificate which confirms he was born c1809/1810. The only clues as to where he was born come from the 1851 census which states place of birth Bariston and the 1861 census which state Scarboro'. There is no such place as Bariston but I have found Burniston which is north of Scarboro.
Samuel married in 1830 in Liversedge, West Yorkshire. On the 1841 census they are living in Beeston (near Leeds) and by 1851 census they have moved to Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire where they remained until his death in 1861 aged 51.
I am trying to find possible entries on the 1841/1851 census for his parents or siblings.
The entry on the 1841 census for a Jane Porritt was mentioned to me on a post on another website as it states on the census that she was also born in Bariston. She is aged 59 at 1841 so is old enough to be his mother or possibly his sister?? It states she is widowed so no help re possible father.
Samuel's first child (assumed as first per 1841 census) was born 1832 and christened Michael. Possibly fathers name??
Also, at his wedding one of the witnesses was a Thomas Porritt. Father or brother perhaps??
Hope I haven't confused you further.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. I have been stuck on this for months and I am determined to solve the mystery.
Many Thanks
Helen
