Wow Trish - they are exhorbitant charges - I'm glad to say I haven't needed to order from any of those.

I wish they would give the option of a photocopy (UK too) for only a few dollars, like I believe they do in Ireland.

I don't know how these places work, but assuming they are digging out the record anyway, a photocopy (dependant upon condition of original) would be a cheap alternative. My certificates from the UK arrive folded, creased, with torn envelopes and shoved through my letterbox. Lucky it doesn't rain any more or they'd be in an even worse state.

The 1 pound from Scotland for an image download is the best value I have found. The NSW transcription option is good but still expensive as is the Vic download - and as you say Family historians don't need certified copies.

I have never been able to find my Irish ancestors  :(   :(  so I don't know about their options.

Good luck with your searching & Christmas wishes  :)   :)

Merry Christmas to you too Trish. Yes, Scottish records are wonderful. I haven't found my Irish either. All I know is from Australian certificates which includes full names of all four ggg parents and names, places and dates of birth for gg grandparents. Even a couple are uncommon names. So it's quite frustrating not to know what to do with all the info. I've found zero on any of the Irish research sites.
Lets hope we make some progress with them in 2007.

Hi all and happy new year.
You can also fax the relevant documentation in to the office. This is what I've always done.
The form can be found at this link:
http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm/PDF/birth_cert.pdf

Of course now the office has reopened after the Christmas New Year holidays, and there may be a bit of a backlog, hard to say, but they do say a period of 10 days (that would be working days) so 2 weeks.
Costs are described here:
http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm/feesandpt.html

Hope this helps.
Cheers niftynita
 :)

PS for international faxing  you need to put 61 7 xxxx xxxx instead of the (07) bit.

It took them more than 10 working days for me last September - they always have a backlog - I went into town - thinking I may get it quicker - where they had 1 person working & 25 of us queuing. When I was eventually at the head of the queue, the man typed in all the details, despite me having the number, obviously what I needed was displayed on the screen but I had to wait over 2 weeks to get it. A work creating stupidity.

The archives used to have the certificates back by return mail - posted form Monday, received Wednesday. They are BOTH state government departments - why can one be so efficient & one so the opposite   ???   ???   ???

Hi Trish
I will admit its been slightly more than a year since I've used them.  Maybe its also gotten worse because I think they've also moved address.  ?? maybe they cut staff numbers down (though they should have more staff as only one office issuing certificates now !!!).    I'll remember to give it plenty of time when I want to order another certificate.
Sounds like they should have brought a few of the staff from the Archives office across to Justice dept to get things done more efficiently.
If I order anything again soon (and send in by fax), I'll let you know how long it takes me.  Maybe in the next month or two ......
See ya
nita
PS last time I ordered from them, the office was in Ann Street, but not the main part of town, more towards the Valley area.

Hi Nita

I had some dealings with them work wise moons ago - when they were in the Treasury Building - now the Casino - things were no different.

They are currently down near the Exec Building (I don't think I ever visited Ann Street). While I was queing a staff member wandered in and interrupted the only person who was serving to borrow a dollar.

I used my mobile to ring and ask if they had any more staff available for the counter, but got a message saying they were too busy to answer the phone.

Am I paranoid about their lack of service - Yes - mind you, they found time to brief the Premier about the most popular names for children last year - big news item!!
