Hi Andy

If you are unfamiliar with Australian certificates, you will find they contain much useful information & may help lead to living relatives & hence the family you would like to find. The 1964 death certificate will give details of the children of the marriage, parents, spouse and burial details.

A cheaper option is to buy a transcript

Thats really helpfu.

To be honest it's our first venture out of the UK in search of info' and it was like starting over again.

Can we expect certs to be sent to the UK? Or do they even do things via emaila on PDF?

If you check the transcription agents I mentioned, at least one of them has online credit card facilities and they will email a transcript. This is NOT a certified certificate, but it is all I ever get for NSW Family history being a copy of the certificate & cheaper. You can also order a certificate online from NSW & that will be posted (same as UK certs).

Each state is different. Victoria has downloadable images online - I don't think any of the others do this. Some are easier to do business with than others.

We have privacy laws here which cause much grief to family historians as you cannot access recent certificates (which you can in England). If you have checked the NSW indexes online you will see you only have births to 1906, marriages to 1956 and deaths to 1976. Most states are similar. This is why death certificates are useful as they list children with their ages.

To see what is on the certificates for each state - and what you can check online look here

http://www.sag.org.au/ozsources/civil.htm  Click on the links for certificate content in each state.

Although you may not meet a family member on RootsChat, if you ask some specific questions, you should get lots of help.

Death and funeral notices from newspapers post 1970 - mainly NSW are given here
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswsdps/dpsindex.htm - they can be handy for more recent deaths.
