Brick wall. Can some one help please
« on: Monday 15 January 07 23:56 GMT (UK) »
I have John Kennard b 1792 Stomping  Sussex and Elizabeth Colvill b Seaford Sussex
I have them in the 1841 Census living at  Limehouse Causeway, St. Annes, Tower Hamlets. Both John 50 Wheelwright and Elizabeth 40 were not born in Country. Children all were. William 17, George 13, Henry 11,  Charles 6, Elizabeth 12, Maria 10.
In 51 at the same address it gives John b Stomping and Elizabeth b Seaford.

St Georges in the East.
Frederick Kennard
Born 25 October 1821
Baptized 25 November 1821
Parents were John (Wheelwright) and Elizabeth
I believe this to be the oldest son who is married by 1841.

The only Marriage's  i can find for John and Elizabeth is on IGI and has the dates, 18 Nov and 28 Nov 1822 Lamberhurst, Kent, England. Extracted Records. There is a Submitted Record saying this couple were b in Lamberhurst.
Could this be the marriage as the oldest child was born in 1821 London and the second child 1824 Poplar.

I can not find a birth record for John and Elizabeth.
Where do i look Sussex or Kent.
Any help much appreciated
Regards
Carol

There is an extracted IGI record for a John (Jno) Kennard baptised 27 Apr 1800 Lamberhurst. I cannot find them earlier at the minute - but in 1861 there is

RG9/497  68/23 Kent Yalding Address: Fowl Hill
John Kennard head Mar 62 Lawyer Kent Lamberhurst
Elizabeth DO wife Mar 62 Kent
Emily do Granddaur 11 Kent Maidstone

My suggestion would be that this may be the couple married in Lamberhurst, who are not your couple. I would look in the London area for a marriage for your John and Elizabeth (I could of course, be utterly incorrect) - and the only marriage that comes up in Pallots is the Lamberhurst one

KENNARD, John
Christening Date:24 Dec 1791   Sompting, Sussex
Father:   James KENNARD
Mother:   Jane

Sompting parish records are not on the IGI (the IGI is a very incomplete index - only 49% for instance of Sussex parish registers have IGI coverage pre 1813).
The 1851 census states John's birthplace was Sompting not 'Stomping'.

How do you know Elizabeth's maiden name was Colville?

I would suggest you ask for a marriage lookup from the Sussex marriage index on the Sussex board.
You cannot 'fit' events found on the IGI simply because they are found, when so many parish registers are not included on the IGI. I believe Sleaford parish registers may also have no coverage on the IGI.

Trish; Thank you but this is not the one as they stayed in the London.

Valda; Thank you. This looks right to me. The information was given to me by Hubby's 4th Cousin and i am now checking it out for myself.
I will see if i can find a marriage in Sussex for John Kennard and Elizabeth ?

I believe Sleaford parish registers may also have no coverage on the IGI.

Sleaford is in Lincs, so is probably not relevant here.

If it's Seaford you're after, there are lots of them on the IGI-

Slip of my typing. The information I took from my Phillimore Atlas and Index of Parish Registers (but the older version) that's why I said 'maybe'. Seaford is not on the BVRI but Sompting is.

The two Sussex parishes are not adjacent.

James Junior, a carpenter was still in Sompting on the 1851 census. William his older brother, an ag lab was still alive in the village in 1841.

Elizabeth Kennard the wife of John, gives her age as 50 on the 1851 census. The nearest Seaford baptism of an Elizabeth is out by a couple of years.
