LYNCH/HENDRIE of Armagh County
« on: Sunday 18 February 07 11:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi There
My GGGrandfather Hugh LYNCH was born in Armagh about 1812. He married Agnes HENDRIE (also born in Armagh, about 1816) sometime in the early 1830's.
Have found that they had moved to Scotland (he was a hand loom weaver) around 1836 when they had the first of their children there.
I would like to obtain more details about their births and hopefully their Irish families. Can any kind soul point me in the right direction.....I am from Australia, so am not able to do physical lookups and I really don't know where to start!!
Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated.
Annie

Hello Annie,

There are several items which need to be established when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish.
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records when searching for Hugh and Agnes as they were born prior to the introduction of Civil Registration in Ireland. This happened in 1864. Marriages of Non Catholic were registered from 1845 onwards.

As this is not a recent request but now you may have found more details about the family, Annie. If not you will probably be able to get more 'Irish information' from Scottish records. See www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to check what information is on Scottish certificates and how to purchase credits to view the scanned images.
Have you traced the family in the Scottish census records yet?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Aghadowey
Sorry for taking so long to reply but I recently moved houses and have only just managed to get my internet reconnected!
Have traced the family in Scotland through the census' and various birth/marriage/death certificates (children only) and then the emigration to Australia of 2 of the female children (my ggrandmother and great aunt).
Am now in the process of trying (through the LDS records) to find the death's of Hugh & Agnes in Ireland post 1864. I believe they returned to Ireland as no further records can be found in Scotland or England after the 1861 census....and they definitely didn't come out to Oz as their daughters did.
I'm hoping that they returned to Armagh to the town of their birth, so I can then research parish records and find their parents etc.
We're always working backwards aren't we?!!
Thanks for taking the time to comment on my search.
Cheers
Annie
