I have found my grandfather in the 1891 census as follows:

Civil Parish of Bathgate (Hamlet of Starlaw)  3, Starlaw Row

James Wilson   Boarder    Unmarried    Age 19  Labourer in the Mine       (born Renfrewshire Paisley)

My problem is finding him before this date  -  I can find him in the 1901 census and have his marriages and death certs but cannot find him before 1891.   Can anyone help?

With a name like James Wilson, I think I have exhausted all possibilities but would appreciate help.

regards

Hi Hazelnuts

What was the name of James's parents from his marriage/death certs?

Regards.

Hi Hazelnuts,

You have my sympathies...

My Grandfather was a William James Wilson...there were dozens of them listed in the year of his birth!! (I ordered at least 10 Birth Certificates which turned out to be wrong...:-(

Best of luck,

Romilly.

Hi again
The parents names given on his marriage cert 1894 were James Wilson and Margaret Gillon.
(unfortunately I have been unable to find their marriage in Scotland England or Wales nor on the 1881 census)
still.......................I am ever hopeful!!!

....therefore parents probably Irish  ::) Was James b. 1872 consistent with his Paisley birth place (ie on the 1901)?. I can't easily see any deaths for a Margaret Wilson/Gill* on SP, except for a 55 year old Margaret in Dumfries in 1908.

What was father James's occupation from the 1894 MC? Were both parents showing as still alive?

Regards.

Neither parents shown as deceased - James Wilson (father)  occupation -  shown as Dyer

James Wilson consistantly says he was born Renfrewshire Paisley (1891 census and 1901 census)

Hazelnuts

:'( I'm not getting anything at all for your James..in fact I think I've been retracing steps (I must have done searches for you in the past for him, all my SP 1881 census search results are coming up as previously viewed  :P).

With the additional reference of the new 1871/91 census index, I'm still not getting anything of substance. The main James & Margaret Wilson families with children born in Paisley are different occupations (estate agent (yes, even in those days!) and a jeweller principally). The only other possiblity, and that's probably due to lack of info is a James b. 1869 in Paisley living in Ayr with his Wilson grandparents, William and Agnes.

Given when he was born, his birth should be there, even if a few years out. There certainly nothing on IGI under Wilson...I'm begining to wonder if perhaps his birth may have been 'out of wedlock'. There are a couple of births of James  to mother Margaret:

JAMES GILLON  Birth: 30 DEC 1871 Row, Dunbarton, Scotland
JAMES GILLAN Birth: 20 FEB 1866 Govan, Lanark, Scotland

It may also explain why we can't find James in 1881 if mother Margaret went on to marry and he is indexed under her married name in 1881...and why Margaret doesn't show in the death searches under Wilson/Gill*.

Just some thoughts, sorry it's nothing more subtantial  :'(

Regards.

The 1881 Census entry in Ayr for a James Wilson:

William Wilson, 65, Head, silk weaver, b. Ireland
Agnes Wilson, 57, wife, b. Ireland
James Wilson, grandson, 14, b. Paisley

Address: James St., Tarbolton, Ayrshire

This is the only James Wilson showing in a search of 9 results, age 7-15 with a Paisley birth place anywhere in Scotland. The other 8 were all with parents with different names.

In respect of the two Gillon entries, I don't have any more than shown on IGI.
I had, on going back on my searches, also done an 1881 census search similar to the Wilson one, ie age 7-15 in this case born Renfrew*. All the Jameses showing with their parents, no Margaret amongst them.

This in part is what set me wondering whether James had been indexed under a different surname if mother Margaret had (re)married.
