1841/1851/1861 census or Marriage Jervis/Eyre
« on: Saturday 31 March 07 12:49 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I have a mystery lady.

This is all I know:

Elizabeth Mary Jervis/Jarvis (suspect surname) was born 1832 St Helens Jersey (according to the 1881 census)
She married someone EYRE between 1852 - 1866 place unknown. (Family folklore says that the guy she married was a cousin to E.J. Eyre of Galway Ireland. Someone thought that was important - I don't know who he was  ??? )

They had at least one child: F J EYRE (I'm assuming his name was Frederick James EYRE born c. 1858)

Mr Eyre died prior to 1866

Elizabeth Mary EYRE (widow) married Frederick Francis MEDCALF in Dec qtr 1866. I have found them in Devon in 1881 (FF was a Minister). Elizabeth Mary is recorded as Mary G Medcalf on the 1881. I have everything after that date (they moved to Oz!).

I just cant find anything about this lady on any census prior to her second marriage either under her assumed maiden name or the EYRE name.

(I hope that makes sense  ::) )

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Di

Oh you wonderful people - thank you so much.

As soon as I saw the name Dewhurst somewhere I knew it was the right family. I understand that Elizabeth's sister, Mary Ann (I didn't know her name before now  ;D) married a guy by the name of Dewhurst as they came to Oz first and encouraged the others to follow.

Finally all the pieces begin to fall into place. Elizabeth's son Frederick James must have been born after 1861 and by 1871 his mother has remarried. Interestingly, Elizabeth later married a guy called Frederick who wanted his first son to be called after himself, but he had a step son called that so they started calling the stepson James  ::) - just imaging having two children, both with the same first name - that's enough to cause major confusion in any family!!

And to know that Elizabeth's father was a Baptist Minister - bet that's how she met her second husband as he was Bapt minister as well (keep it in the family!!)

I will write all this down and check for missing bits and will be back. I'll also look for Eyre/Jarvis marriage now I have confirmation about her maiden name

Thank you both SO MUCH
