1901 census Milburn
« on: Saturday 07 April 07 19:32 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have totally lost track of John Thomas Milburn brn abt 1871/2 his birthdate may be 21st November Bishop Auckland Co Durham.

Son of  William Milburn brn abt 1843 and Elizabeth Simpson brn 1853 living in Evenwood Co Durham

I have found him still living with his family on the 1881 census and the 1891 census and know that he was still around in 1896 as he was a witness at Eliz Jane Milburns marriage.

Thank you

This is the only possibility I can find - the birthplace isn't right and he's a bit older but then his wife is 34 and I have  seen before one of a couple adjust their age to make it closer to their spouse's.  I've had a look on the 1891 for a John T Millburn of this age and can't find one.

Anyway - for information/elimination -

1901 - RG13, piece 4652, folio 46, p 18.
Foundry Yard, West Auckland, Durham.

John T Millburn, Head, M, 32, Coal Miner, Hewer, b. Witton le Hole, Durham.
Ellen Millburn, Wife, 34, b. Fertree, Durham.
Hannah Millburn, Daughter, 6, b. Cockfield, Durham.
Ethel Millburn, Daughter, 4, b. Etherley Moor, Durham.

k,

Looking at the family from C1851 ( 2386-86-17) they appear to be accurate age-keepers... and liked Swann Row, Evenewood.

After appearing together on C1891, the family of William Milburn and Elizabeth Simpson, are all accountable on C1901 ( except William who just didn't make it )....

William  Died 58 1st Qtr 1901 Auckland Reg District

Widow Elizabeth with dtrs Nellie and Elizabeth Jane Barnes at C1901 4652-165-61.

Annie and sister Elizabeth Ann ( Bowman) at 4655-44-1.

Leaving John T !

Salop Lass's take for John T at West Auckland ( 4652-46-18) is about the best candidate for him, but there are negatives about him.....

Age, birthplace, variation of surname...

Maybe this is fault of census numerator, rather than John T.... Although I am a Northumberland lad, I don't think there was/is such a place in Co Durham as Witton le Hole !  Yes to Witton le Wear, and Hetton le Hole !

Interesting that John T gets for borth-places... C1881=Bishop Auckland,
C1891 Evenwood... C1901 ????.

Do you have the marriage of this couple John T Milburn/Millburn and Ellen ?

Hi

thanks for the info have had a look at the 1901 with John and Ellen but am not sure.

I am totaly at a loss - I have managed to find all. Like you say the dates and place were all relatively correct through out the censuses.   I can account for all his sisters and have just had all info confirmed by a relative Eliz Annes grand daughter- She has a birthday cook book that has birthday entries in.  We are both at a loss

John Thomas was the eldest and as you say it says he was born in Bishop Auckland

Next Elizabeth Jane - she was actually born in 17 Dec 1873 Esperley Lane Cockfield

All the other sisters where born in Evenwood

John Thomas was a witness at Eliz Janes marriage in Evenwood in 1896

In Elizabeth Annes birthday cook book it seems that all names are written in full except John Thomas who is written as J T  Milburn 21 Nov and seems to have been entered prior to his sister Ellen Margaret (Nellie) marriage in 1903.

I haven't got the marriage cert as couldn't even find anything until shropshire lass found - maybe worth ordering the marriage cert.

I have order a birth cert but was hard finding that - it is the nearest and one registered in Auckland so hopefully that may give some info

Can't find any death info around the right time either

We are both at a loss on John Thomas  ???

Thanks for you input all helps i have maybe been looking too hard.  Hope we find him.  I have only maps of the areas as i live in Bristol and have little knowledge of the village names/town in Durham - but is interesting that you say that there maybe no Witton le Hole - I have a map and am learning fast  :)

thank you both for the help

K,

I realise that the birth of John T would have been registered at AUCKLAND Registration District, but was he born in Bishop Auckland or another community with AUCKLAND Reg District ?

Hi Michael

Thank you Michael  - now may have another avenue to look at.

John Thomas's got married in the Oct 1/4 1871 in Auckland district - I am still waiting for the marriage cert on this one too

If the birthday cook book is correct 21 Nov and the census years of 1871/2  then i am thinking maybe JT's mother was bery pregnant with him when they married.  His mother Elizabeth Simpson was living at Primrose Hill in Bishop Auckland with her mother and step father at the time of the 1871 census.

His father was living in Evenwood in 1871.

Think maybe I need to wait and have a look at the birth and marriage certs

Thank you
k

Hi Kazdel,

I've been trying to find a connection to my Milburn family but as yet I can't find one.
My....George and Jane milburn also lived in Swann Row, so I would think they come from the same family......but where.  Jane as a first and middle name crops up a lot in the Milburns.  My grans only daughter was called Jane after my gran's mother.

If I find a link I'll let you know.

Michael is very good at Durham and Northumberland isn't he?.....but not at typing.....or maybe he's been on the ? again.......lol...........sorry Michael!!

Jean,

I was so upset at your disparaging remarks about my typing skills that I opened a can !

-----------------------------------------

You know some folk in the Fam Hist game specialise in topics like Mining, Railways, Shipbuilding etc... well I specialise about places/parishes/administration  etc in 1800s context....

why ?? .... I was forced to !....because I used to make so many mistakes and go up many wrong garden paths, because of my ignorance or because I used my modern knowledge of places, which was usually more of a hindrance than a help after a hundred years of change.
