William Roberts & Elizabeth Hayman Advice please
« on: Tuesday 17 April 07 09:08 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have a copy of the marriage certificate of William Roberts and Elizabeth Hayman - my husbands GGGGrandparents. They were married in 1848 at the Collegiate Church in Wolverhampton despite William being born in Shrewsbury and Elizabeth in Broseley.

From the 1851 census onwards they were living in Broseley and remained there until they died.

My question is how do I go about going further back - where do I look?
I have info on Elizabeths father and Williams is named as John on his marriage cert - dead. How do I trace siblings of Williams?

I'd be grateful for any advice anyone can give me - I'm still fairly new to this and trying to find my way round everywhere!!!

Regards Sarah

The 1841 census would be a start, then its parish registers for earlier info ...

how old were the Bride & Groom on the Marriage Cert - dont tell me 'of full age' ...  ;)

In 1861, William states Shrewsbury, St Chad as his PoB.

In 1841 there is a William of the right age in St Chad - but not with his family ...

In the Houlsworth household - a shoemaker, with a few other shoemakers also enumerated in the dwelling ..

Of the half dozen John Roberts in St Chad, 2 are old enough to be his father ...

If we assume that John and Jane married and stayed in St Chad, then this could well be them:-

John Roberts to
JANE EVANS
Marriage:  08 DEC 1814   Saint Chad, Shrewsbury

WOW!! Thanks for all that Newfy I really appreciate all your help. :)

Elizabeths name is def Hayman - I have details on her father John also from the Broseley area. Both ages are described as "full" on the certificate.

My William was a shoemaker/cordwainer so it looks like that is him on the 1841 census.

Can I ask how do I go about looking at Parish Registers?

Once again thanks for all the work you've done - I have a bit more to go on now!!

Hi - pleased to help  :)

The Mormons - Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) - have transcribed a lot of Parish Registers and both Shrewsbury and Broseley seem fairly comprehensively covered, I obtained that above info via

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/

which is a 'friendly' pre-search site for the actual LDS / IGI (international Genealogical Index) found in

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Home/Welcome/welcome.asp

Parishes not or partially covered by the LDS/IGI have to be inspected at County Archives - you can 'Google' for locations..

Have a tinker and come back with any questions ... its a tad more complex than indicated, but that will get you started.
