Charles John Rosson was my great grandfather, my grandfather Ernest Lancelot was born in 1878 and is mentioned in his mother's, Lavinia Bland, will.

On a later census it says he was a 'plaid' manufacturer - but why would you make plaid in Luton? Isn't that what the Scottish make kilts out of  ;D

It may be possible that the word could be "Plait" manufacturer as Luton was well known in the plaiting and straw hat making industry. Many people around the area would be involved in straw plaiting. In fact the local football team are known as The Hatters!
