Hi Monica,

I have just recieved a birth cert for one of Roberts Sons who were born here in New Zealand.

Child           Robert Hamilton b  28th Jun 1881

Father       Robert Hamilton Thomson
                     Labourer
            age  33yrs
          Born     Ireland

Mother       Elizabeth Thomson
                Formerly    Hunter
                Age     33yrs
             Born  Aberdeen Sct

Guess that was where we were heading all along.
My thanks to you for all the effort you gave to  my question.

Still waiting on the death cert to give me parents names.

I took an interest in this topic because I have Graham ancestors from Perthshire. I couldn't find any trace of Robert Thomson (b Tillicoutry 1842) in the 1851 census but I think I have found his sister Elizabeth Thomson. She is in Falkirk living with the Watters (sic) family and described as a "natural child"  I also found a marriage in Falkirk in 1849 (IGI) between a Robert Waters & Margaret Graham.  My guess is that Elizabeth's father Alexander died and Margaret remarried. As for Robert, there is no mention of him.
I think this Alexander Thomson/ Margaret Graham marriage took place in Falkirk in 1840 but there was also another marriage between a couple with the same names in Dunblane or Alloa in 1821.(I suspect that Margaret was one of my Dunblane Graham's and Alexander was from Alloa with the banns read in both places) so with both surnames being relatively common it would not be unusual to find another marriage of people with those names in Ireland.

I'm really pleased for you that the NZ records confirm the Irish Robert  . Although the Irish side will make it neigh on impossible to research Robert's family back given the lack of Irish records at least you have confirmed his birth country - something to work on. 

Just a thought on the Hunter side. The Agnes that we have as potentially Elizabeth's mother died in the City Poorhouse. You might be lucky and be able to find Poor Relief Records/Applications for Agnes that can potentially disclose a huge amount of info on the family that you would not normally be able to access through any other sources.

Have a look at this link www.workhouses.org.uk and through the tabs on the left - Workhouse Locations/Scottish Poorhouses/Aberdeenshire/Aberdeen - you will find historical details on the Poorhouse. A fascinating read and piece of history.

I am not sure what records remain for the period you are looking at (1860s) but you could try contacting the Aberdeen City Archives and make enquiries. Their email (replace * with @/brackets off):  archives*aberdeencity(.)gov(.)uk (www.aberdeencity.gov.uk). Fingers crossed that you will find something on Agnes. Let me know!

It now looks like Alexander Thomson and Elizabeth Graham were from Ireland as well.

I have John Thomson 1881 now married with a family  in Dundee,
James in 1881 Married with a family in Dundee.
1871
Margaret John & James living together with a Niece in Dundee.

Hi Monica,

I have just recieved the correct death cert for Robert Hamilton Thomson.
He was born North of Ireland 1848  came to New Zealand 1875-1876
Parents
Alexander Thomson occupation Ploughman
Margaret Thomson ( Graham)

So this makes the death we found for Alexander wrong as that one was a weaver.

That is great news on Robert's birth details, Margaret  I did pick up from the details you had for Margaret's death (mother) that Alexander husband was down as ploughman (from memory, also ploughman/lab. on son Robert's marriage cert). As you, I don't think the 1851 entry in Wellgate in likely to be Robert and family.

I still come back to the Census we found in 1851 in Dundee.
Have just rechecked the death cert for

Margaret Thomson 1869 widow of Alexander Thomson.
Father James Graham Crofter dec no mothers name
Address is 184 Hilltown Dundee.

Roberts Marriage Cert 1870
Address 194 Hilltown Dundee
You are correct Father is a ploughman on Marriage cert but a labourer on death cert.

I think the death cert address and marriage cert address are the same place with perhaps a transcribing error.

I am still searching for the death of Alexander sometime between 1851and 1869.

Will find it one day maybe.

There's an Alexander Thomson born in Buckie Scotland than came over with the family.
He and one  Brother John settled in Chicago, IL and their mother lived with John until she died.
