Cambusnethan born descendants
« on: Sunday 06 May 07 17:09 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm looking for any descendents of William McNeil and Annie Hill McNeil.   They were married in Cambusnethan, Wishaw in 1888.    William was a coal miner and they lived in Waterloo.     I have marriage certificates and death certificates for them but am particularly interested to find out where Annie Hill came from originally as I can't find her on any census forms in Cambusnethan between 1888 and 1909 when she died.

My family comes from their daughter Annie Hill McNeil who married William Reid in Edinburgh in 1926.

I'm also keen to hear from any of Annie's brothers or sisters descendents namely Hugh, Robert Henry, James, Janet, Jean or Hector.   There was a brother John but he died in infancy.    Hugh McNeil lived in Coalsnaughton I think and I know Jean died in Bellahouston in Glasgow aged 90.   James and Robert may have lived in the Edinburgh area but I don't know about Janet and Hector.

I'd be grateful for any information from anyone out there with any connections to the family.

Looking forward in anticipation for any information out there.

Best regards

Pat Reid
Edinburgh :) :) :)

When was Annie born and who were her parents? Her birth record will tell you what you need

Hi, saw your post today about Hector McNeil.  Since posting the enquiry in 2007, I've found out more about the McNeil family.  Hector married Elizabeth Locke, they had three sons.  Would it be the same Hector?  Also, finally found out that Annie Hill was born in Ireland.  Best regards, Pat Reid.

There are a few members of this family buried in Cambusnethan cemetery.

ANNIE McNEIL. Housewife, Overtown, aged 40 years, married.
Parents - John Hill & Ann Jane Kellochan.
Interred in plot E1645 on 2nd June 1909.
Plot owner was William McNeil, coalpit fireman, 132 Orchard Row, Overtown.

also in plot E1645 were -

THOMAS S. McNEIL. Cambusnethan, aged 23 days.
Parents - William McNeil & Catherine Smith.
Interred 21st December 1911.

and

THOMAS S. McNEIL. Wishaw, aged 1 year.
Parents - William McNeil & Catherine Smith.
Interred 9th February 1914.

The following 5 entries are all for Plot D44.

WILLIAM McNEIL. Waterloo, aged 7 years.
Parents - William McNeil & Annie Hill.
Interred 29th May 1897.

CAROLINE MARGARET JANE WAUGH. Carluke, aged 3 months.
Parents - George Waugh & Jane Ralston.
Interred on 15th October 1891.

JOHN WILSON. Coal miner, Waterloo, aged 35 years, married.
Parents - Arthur Wilson & Margaret Irvine.
Interred on 20th May 1893.

WILLIAM WILSON. Waterloo, aged 18 months.
Parents - John Wilson & Jessie McNeil.
Interred on 4th December 1893.

JAMES WRIGHT. Waterloo, aged 6 years & 6 months.
Parents - John Wright & Violet McNeil.
Interred on 26th May 1898.

So,  we can assume that D44 holds McNeils who are in various ways related to William & Annie.
Their son William is in there, buried 1897. The Wilson connection comes in through Jessie McNeil and the Wright connection through Violet McNeil. The Waugh entry may have been a neighbour's child or another relation, perhaps a cousin? Would it be right to assume that Jessie & Violet were sisters of William senior? (and so  sisters-in-law to Annie Hill).  If they are William's sisters, was their parents John McNeil and Janet Reid?  Here is a record of Violet's interment -

VIOLET WRIGHT. Housewife, Gillhead, aged 47 years, married.
Parents - John McNeil & Janet Reid.
interred in plot E2309 on 3rd October 1912.
Plot owned by John Wright, coal miner, 4 Gillhead, Wishaw.

Assuming I'm on the right track, I found the following -

STILLBORN MALE McNEIL. Wishaw.
Parents - John McNeil & Janet Reid.
Interred in common ground on 9th April 1875.

MARY McNEIL. Wishaw, aged 2 years.
Parents - John McNeil & Janet Reid.
Interred in common ground on 21st June 1875.

THOMAS McNEIL. Overtown, aged 3 months.
Parents - John McNeil & Janet Reid.
Interred in common ground on 4th December 1876.

HECTOR McNEIL. Overtown, aged 13 years.
Parents - John McNeil & Janet Reid.
Interred in common ground on 26th December 1876.

NEWBORN MALE McNEIL. Overtown, aged 5 minutes.
Parents - John McNeil & Janet Reid.
Interred in common ground on 15th October 1877.

Lastly, the following 3 McNeils may or may not be related to you but, with the Christian names matching so well, I thought I'd better include them.
All 3 are interred in plot E63 and are the children of James McNeil and Mary Brown. (Could he be a brother of William?).

HECTOR McNEIL. Waterloo, aged 3 years.
Interred on 4th January 1899.

HUGH McNEIL. Waterloo, aged 2 years & 4 months.
Interred on 13th April 1908.

VIOLET McNEIL. 114 1/2 Main Street Wishaw, aged 17 years, unmarried.
Interred on 11th March 1916.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

Thank you for all the lair information.  John McNeil and Janet Reid were the parents of William, Janet Wilson, Violet Wright, and James McNeil.  I don't know of any connection to Waugh but might research that now.

After Annie Hill McNeil died, William married Catherine Smith and, after sadly losing 2 boys, they went on to have another 4.

 They were hard, sad times.

Best wishes, Pat Reid.
