Also for Ilkeston:- (Messrs Samuel & Thomas Potter)

Matthew Carrington - nine years old - has worked at the pit for six months - would rather work than go to school.

William Wright - 17 years old - has worked in the pits for 10 years. He has worked under Barber & Co at the Robinettes (Cossall ?) At 13 he went to Dr Manson's at Newthorpe then Awsworth. Then at Piper Pit which is now worked out.

Luke Wright - 25 years old - worked at the pit since he was 8.

Hello Mog,
Many thanks for the information, that is really helpful.
I did see Matthew when I first went through the CD; sadly not one of mine.

Belated reply to this post but hope it is of interest. We have recently started researching our families histories and my wife Susan's (nee Gee) family name is Cresswell. I believe her family roots lie in Smalley and I am outlining her history in reverse:
Mother Irene Emily Cresswell born Sheffield 1910
Grandfather: William V(incent) born Urpeth Co Durham 1886 (lived variously in Newbottle, Tibshelf, Sheffield and, latterly, Bircotes)
Great grandfather: George J born Smalley 1855 (lived variously in Wakefield, (New)Malton and, possibly, Dunstable)
Great great grandfather: Thomas born Smalley 1829
Great great great grandfather Joseph born Smalley 1797
Great great great great grandfather John born 1773 (married to Elizabeth)
Great great great great great grandfather; Johnathan born  Smalley date not yet known.
I do have a little more info on siblings etc if these may be of interest to anyone?

Thanks Sarah... I had noticed about  Penna but decided to post anyway in the hope that our 'tree' may help others looking at the Cresswell family. Will keep 'looking in' to check. Many thanks for the response.
