Felin/Phelan CANDY of Camolin
« on: Sunday 03 June 07 17:00 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me to sort out the parents of Felin (aka Phelan) CANDY who was born in Camolin or Ballyoughter around 1826?

I believe his parents were James and Elizabeth. From other sources, I think his mother's maiden name was PEPPARD, and that James CANDY married Elizabeth PEPPARD some time around 1815.

Any help with this elusive family would be most welcome.

Kind regards

Philip Candy

Many thanks indeed for this very helpful information. Although the date of birth differs slightly from what I have for Phelan/Felin Candy from his tombstone, the name is so rare, and the coincidence of locations is so compelling that this is almost certainly the right person.

Two more questions:

1. Can you see any other baptisms to children of James and Betty Candy; and
2. Where would I look to find their marriage?

I really appreciate your help with this enquiry.

Many thanks

Philip Candy

Hi Philip,

Candy is a rare name in this part of the country; there are currently none in all of Co. Wexford and just a hand full of families in Leinster. It is most certain these are your Candys. If I get a chance this weekend I will do a lookup for you in the parish records as I live close by to Camolin.

John

I really would appreciate your help with this.

If that tombstone is right, both James and Elizabeth - the parents - should also be buried at Camolin, which may carry the search back another generation.

It would also be interesting to look for other members of the same family. I am pretty sure that there were several other brothers and sisters, and it would be interesting to find out what became of them.

Finally, the real prize would be to track down James and Elizabeth's marriage, although at that early date (probably around 1815) it's unlikely to mention the name of James's father unfortunately.

I look forward to hearing from you, and thanks again for writing.

Kind regards

Great to hear that one can "look up" the parish registers in Wexford. In most areas no access for lookups is allowed.

John
Amongst other things I have found two men, probably brothers, who served in the British Army in the nineteenth century.

JAMES CANDY
Born BALLYCARNEY, Wexford
Served in 86th Foot Regiment
Discharged aged 25
Covering dates 1820-1827

JOHN CANDY
Born FERNS, Wexford
Served in 98th Foot Regiment
Discharged aged 39
Covering dates 1824-1839

Of course you can't jump to conclusions, but looking at a map of that part of Wexford, Ballycarney, Ferns and Camolin all look quite close together.  Maybe I should try to obtain their service records?

Do you think this could be the same James Candy who married Elizabeth Peppard?
Kind regards

Many thanks for these extra links, John.

It is hard to tell exactly how old Patrick was: in one source it says he was 53 when he died in 1869, and in another, that he was 65!

It certainly looks as if many of these people were related; I will look forward to any more light you can shed once you've managed a visit to Camolin!

Kind regards and thanks again

Philip Candy
