Am wondering if anyone has any history of a Nisbet family who I am told were of Kelso (or surrounding area) and emigrated to New Zealand in the 1800's, it was before 1880. The name was George Scott Nisbet who was married to a Sophia Sanson in 1880 in Wellington NZ and I need to verify that it was Kelso he came from and that the information I had was correct. I will also put this on the New Zealand section. At the time of his marriage George was a reporter aged 29 which gives him a birth year of approx. 1851.

I've had a good search for your George (various surnames) on the 1851 and 1861 censuses and in the parish records for a baptism 1848-1854 but can find nothing in Kelso or in Aberdeenshire (your original query board).

The nearest that I can come up with for baptisms are in Berwickshire

1849, Eyemouth
1853, Eyemouth
1854, Hutton

He might not have been baptised in the Church of Scotland though.

Did his marriage certificate not give any information about his father?
