Campbell Bingham Drumgooland
« on: Friday 08 June 07 19:55 BST (UK) »
My grandfather David Campbell was born in Shannaghan in 1890. I understand Shannaghan is an 'unattached townland' of the Parish of Newry attached to the Parish of Annaclone (Katesbridge seems to be in Shannaghan). My grandfather's parents were John Campbell from Shannaghan and Harriet Jane Bingham (or Bigham?) from Moneyslane in Drumgooland Parish. John's father was George Campbell and Harriet Jane's was John Bingham. Despite living most of their family life in Belfast, one brother of my grandfather was buried in Closkelt while his mother, another brother and sister were buried in Drumadonald near Moneyslane. All the above locations appear to be in the same general vicinity so it seems that originally the Campbells and Binghams must have lived relatively close to one another.

Obviously I'm trying to source more information about George Campbell (or John Bingham) so if the research of anyone out there overlaps mine or if you can help me in any way I'd love to here from you.

Thank you.

Thanks for your interest and help Jim.

Sorry for the delay in replying - I've been out of the country recently.

I'll follow up the Griffith information and see where it leads.

John.

The other suggestion is that you might look in the baptism records of Drumgooland Presbyterian Church, which are available on microfilm in the Public Records Office in Belfast (PRONI). Unfortunately the records are not in good condition and only go back to 1860. I also approached the current keeper of the grave records in the church (which is in Cloghskelt - a place which has about 3 spellings) but they apparently have been neglected in the past as well. My wife's grandfather was born in Moneyslane and is buried in Drumgooland Pres Church graveyard in Cloghskelt. Did you also know Patrick Bronte (originally Brunty) cmae from Imdel (or Emdale), Drumballyroney near Moneyslane/ Katesbridge.

Not sure what you mean by "Shannaghan is an 'unattached townland' of the Parish of Newry attached to the Parish of Annaclone."
Have you checked LDS catalogue (www.familysearch.org) to see if local church records have been microfilmed?

Yes, the maps there are very good but slower computers may find it difficult to use.
