RNAS Burscough was intended for the RAF, but was re-allocated to the navy before opening as HMS Ringtail. Because of its proximity, it was used in emergency by flights intended for Burtonwood. You can still see the remains about 2km west from the railway station.

I don't know whether army personnel would be based there; I'd expect the RN did their own guard duties.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

There was definitely an army base at Burscough - there are numerous references on the web to REME (21 Cmd Wksp) and RAOC people having been stationed there.
