Hi,

My gggt grandfather James Ellis, was a customs officer in Plymouth, Devon in the 1840's. Does anyone know of somewhere I might find information on this? Are there any records kept somewhere?

Thanks,

Hi Red

I believe you will find a number of relevant documents in The National Archives at Kew.

Pay lists and staff lists:
CUST 39 (1671 to 1922) and T 42 (1716 to 1847)

Pension records:
CUST 39/145-151 (1803 to 1922)

According to my book about TNA, CUST 28 (Records of the Boards of Customs and Excise, 1734-1885) contains "information on the first and later postings of Customs officers, with details of any praise or censure: [it contains] no family details, but can be used to work out the details of a man's career."

Hope this helps

Dave

Hi

Am interested in the records at the NA re the Customs Service.

My ggg grandfather was Comptroller of Customs, Liverpool between 1827 and 1841 - estimated.

I would like to know the full details of his career.  How do I go about this taking into account I live in inland Australia?

I would appreciate any advice.

Cheers for now

your first stop should be the Albert dock maritime museum. They have a customs museum  i have been a few times. I don't know if the different museums have their own email or you have to contact the library. There is bound to be a contact number though

The HM-Waterguard website contains pages containing information about Customs, Excise, Customs & Excise,  Coastguard - Preventive Water Guard (created in 1809), Waterguard and 1972 - The End of an Era.

As described above CUST 39 at the National Archives would be a good place to start. If you're in Australia, someone else would presumably have to do it on your behalf.
