Cheltenham 1891 look-up please
« on: Tuesday 03 July 07 21:29 BST (UK) »
Could someone please look-up Thomas Willie (yes, that's what it says on his Birth Certificate) Spackman in 1891. Born in Cheltenham in 1873 he was with his parents at the Beaufort Arms in Charlton Kings in 1881 but not there in 1891.
When he went to the USA in 1896 he gave his occupation as "Joiner", so he may have been an apprentice in 1891.
Many thanks.

This may be him, bear with me I seem to be picking the hard to read entries  ::)

1891 census RG12/2463/F21/p35 - indexed under Spachman
Warwick Road, Acocks Green, Yardley, Worcester.

William James (looks more like Joyner to me) head 54 Baker b Oxford Bampton
Ruth wife 56
Elizabeth Whitney (indexed under James) serv 28 asst. do
Thomas Spackman (spelling quite clear on image) serv 16

No place of birth is given for Elizabeth Whitney or for Thomas...

if anyone else would like to take a look and see what they think  ???

Hello Suey,

I had a look at that and agree with you that it's hard to read, but under magnification it's definitely William Joyner, not William James, and it's Spackman, not Spachman. Thomas's age is wrong too, 16 when he should be 18, and with the lack of a birthplace Mr. Joyner doesn't seem to know his servant very well.

Which makes me wonder if Thomas was not merely sleeping there and working next door at the New Inn. This sounds much more likely than him working in a bakery, as he'd spent all his life in a pub and would have known that trade well.

Anyway, in spite of the wrong age and the lack of a birthplace it must be a strong possibility, but the best result I've had so far. Many thanks for your interest.

Regards, Alastairgm

Just for information - the Beaufort Arms still exists - a picture of it appears in this link.

If you go to their site you can book it for accommodation. I often walk past it.

It is just on the edge between Charlton Kings and Cheltenham

I used to live at the Beaufort Arms in the 1960's and have to say it looks a whole lot better now for its updating.

The Beaufort Arms was right on the toll gate on the road to London in the past and was part of Charlton Kings but was taken into Cheltenham Borough many years ago.

Hi Suey,
I've now found that the Thomas Spackman in Acocks Green in 1891 isn't the Thomas Willie Spackman born in Cheltenham in 1873 I was looking for. He was in Brazil by then, working as a Telegraph Operator, probably for his Uncle (by Marriage) Alfred Best Tugman's family firm of fruit importers, where he died around 1923.
