Hi Kerry
He joined up 1st with the South Staffordshire Regiment. Then transferred to the Royal Engineers.
With his South Staffs number with the prefix 7 combined with the theatre entry date of July 1915 Egypt i would hazard a guess as to 7th Battalion as they deployed to Gallipolli via Egypt on or around those dates.
As to the RE number havent got much on that.
As you say the Kew Medal Rolls may give you positive Battalion number.
He was demobbed to Class Z reserves in 1919 liable for recall if the war kicked off again.
Ill post a link from another site will give you an insight into South Staffs Reg.

Rank Lance Corporal,Entitled to 15 star British War and Victory which would be engraved with South Staffs information.(x denotes this)

Hope this helps.

Heres the link Kerry.
If George had a trade or was a miner etc that could explain him joining the Royal Engineers.

Ady, thanks so much for posting the information and link.  You have my appreciation!!

Well George's father was a very successful Pork butcher and several of George's older brother's appear on the 1901 census as butcher assistants in the family business.

George eventually became a chemist so I can't actually put my finger on why he would have joined the Royal Engineers.

Gas!!
The Royal Engineers "Special Companies" were used as Gas warfare troops and employed chemists etc all who had a little knowledge.

This could be why he went there.

Ah!!  I never thought of that.   I think you could be right.

He worked as a Chemist in an emulsion works at one stage in his professional life.
