Rossiter Families In County Cork
« on: Wednesday 15 December 04 07:40 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to track down the following Rossiter family and would appreciate any help.

The family consists  of:-

John Rossiter born about 1815
His wife Mary born about 1813
Mary and Elizabeth, their daughters born in about 1843 and 1845 respectively.

The family left Ireland and went to live in Emmett St Clair in Michigan, USA. Elizabeth aka "Lizzie" married George Christman in Trumansburg, New York in 1867.

The spelling of the Rossiter name may be different as it can be spelt several different ways e.g.Rosseter.

I'd appreciate any help in tracking this family down and would be pleased to hear fo any Rossiter family in County Cork as they might be related. TIA.

best wishes

Hi,

There are 168 Rossiters living in Wexford in the Griffith Valuation and none from Co Cork. Do you know when they left Ireland and if they stopped somewhere else in between?

Hi Kated,

Thanks for your interest and your posting. I've just re-read all the data I have gathered plus some new stuff which has come in and it now seems likely that they went to America prior to 1860 as they are listed in the 1860 US Census.

It's also possible that they may have left from Tipperary and not Cork. Problem is I'm relying on people who like myself only have limited information about the family. I apologise for any inconvenience this causes.

Is this Griffith Valuation online at all? Also is there an Irish equivalent to the 1881 Census and is that online please? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Hi,

Try this site for an index to the Griffith Valuation. Note that the search is not 100% reliable. Blame Google not the webmaster.

The Irish 1881 census was destroyed by the Government for reasons of secrecy a long time ago.

Hi Kate,

Thanks for that. It'll be useful both now and in the future. Pity the government destroyed the census it would have been great for tracking families down. Thanks again.
