Frederick Hopper Wallace
« on: Thursday 16 August 07 20:18 BST (UK) »
I've hit a brick wall with Frederick Hopper Wallace (mainly because he moved to Shanghai in about 1890). I can't find him on IGI and since I don't have a birth date or place I have been unable to find him in any census returns although I do know he was in the country in 1885 as his son's birth was registered and I have a copy of the birth certificate.

I know that he married Emily Illegible (but might be Mayers) and that they had Dare Frederick Alexander Wallace b. 1 June 1885 Southampton d. 8 June 1938 Shanghai who married Hilda Doreen Unknown and that they had Joyce Marion Wallace b. 3 Jan 1923 d. 24 Jan 2006 and also Ronald Dare Wallace dates unknown both born in Shanghai (Ronald comes from his will which I found at National Archives).

I'm waiting for a copy of the probate of Frederick Hopper Wallace's will from National Archives which indicates that he died, or at least probate was granted, in 1926.

Hope this rings some bells because my forehead is getting bruised trying to break through the wall!

David

Getting the birth cert of Dare (bn 1885) would give his mother's maiden name, and therefore clarify who Frederick married. (or is that what you already have where her name is illegible?)

modified - just re read your post and you do have a copy of the birth cert - sorry!

Thanks Daisy that looks really promising. I've got his will and he was a master mariner which ties in quite nicely with Frederick John being in customs.

fantastic piece of sleuthing!

I can fill in a lot of holes David. Ronald was born in 1930. he also has a sister called naomi. older than joyce. Their father died of cancer in 1936 or seven. he dropped dad off in england. Hilda fled to usa and remarried.
