Lost at Sea
« on: Tuesday 21 August 07 07:22 BST (UK) »
 ??? Can anyone help please?
My ggg grandmother's father was reportedly "lost at sea" 9 August 1815 in the Gulf of Florida.  His ship (The Isle of Thanet) was one of a fleet of 15, nine sank during a storm.
I have searched for information on this - google does not give me anything on the ship name and the only record I have of a storm on this date is from Wikkipedia.
My gggg grandfather was captain of the ship - David Young VI
Any help - or ideas where to go for further information - would be awesome.

Yes, David Young was English and as far as I know the ship was RN.
My ggg grandmother was born 2 days before he drowned - the information comes from a book of poems Emma left.  As the info would have been based on what she was told it may be incorrect

Hi

The information that you are seeking may be in the marine records of Lloyds, which are held in the Guildhall Library, London.  There is a brief description of the Lloyds of London records at

Good luck

Thanks everyone.  I emailed the Royal Navy Library and they have told me that there is no ship from that era called The Isle of Thanet nor any Captain David Young in their records.  Maybe my ggg grandmother was dreaming ... gonna be interesting finding out exactly what DID happen (if I ever so)!

Nothing in The Times newspaper which listed the names of Captains and lost ships and nothing on this website which lists

The Deadliest Atlantic Tropical Cyclones, 1492 - Present
Atlantic tropical cyclones that may have caused at least 25 deaths

Thank you Valda - I havent checked out the Times, and thank you for doing so. The research that you've done on the storms matches my information too.
Can't wait to find out what really DID happen  :)

Dear Kiwi
Have you tried searching in a local area?  If the ship was called Isle of Thanet - did she and Captain Young originate from Kent.  If so have you tried contacting the Kentish archives ? The ship or he, may be mentioned in a shipping register or crew list.

Hi Karin
I was searching for info about Capt. David Young as I am also descended from him.  I have the same poems as my starting point and got stuck at a similar point that you did. I'm wondering if you've had any luck since. I am descended from Emma Ann's daughter Isabella who married Charles McIntyre. Sheryl.
