William PHARE
« on: Friday 14 September 07 07:18 BST (UK) »
Hello,
seeking to find out more about my Phare ancestors.  I have William Phare born April 14, 1818 in the village of Bratton Clovelly, by his own hand on naturalization records.  He married Ann Hyne in 1850 uncertain if marriage in Devon. They had several children born in Stoke Dameral, and a few born in Devenport in Devon.  They immigrated to Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio in US 1866/1867.

Wondering who William's parents were and if he had siblings.  Also wondering if I have found all of William & Ann's children. Uncertain in which place each child was born and if there were others I missed.

Children I have are: Ellen Eliza b. 1853; Martha Jane b. September 1865; Edith Mary b. February 1867; Elizabeth Ann b. 1851; Frederick R. b. September 1863; John James b. 1858; William Henry b. 1856; and Minnie O. (born in Ohio 1870).

Thanks for any help.

Hi Audie443,

I see Ann was born in Cornwall. Even William suggests he was born in Cornwall in 1851

Hi again Audie443,

I don't see a possible marriage listing a wife of Ann Hyne, however in 1849 we have

William PHARE June 1/4 1849 Stoke Damerel. A possible wife is Ann BONNEY

Now Ann lists a birth in Botus Fleming in both census entries. I see

Ann BUNNEY baptised 11 Dec 1825 Botus Fleming Base Child Mother Mary

There does not appear to be an Ann HYNE baptised in Botus Fleming. It may pay to get one of the childrens birth certs to confirm mothers name.

Kris,
Thanks for the census and info on Mary Jane Phare.  According to 1900 Census Ann had 12 children so that leaves 3 unaccounted for.

Ann's birth date from death cert (1914) was November 30, 1823 father was listed as George Hyne but perhaps was mistaken. 1900 Census also lists her birth as November 1823.

Also wondering about William's siblings as I have found a Thomas Phare, and a John Phare in Cleveland at the same time all born England. There is only 1 other Phare (another William) in Ohio in 1870 and not in same county, so it makes me wondering if all related.

1870 Census East Cleveland
Phare, Thomas age 47 Mason, born England
Phare, Mary age 45    born England
Phare, Thomas age 13 born Ohio
Phare, William age 9 born Ohio

1880 Census East Cleveland
Phare, Thomas age 53 Mason, born England
Phare, Mary age 53 born England
Phare, Henry age 23 born Ohio
Phare, W???? age 19 born Ohio

1900 Census East Cleveland
Phare, Henry T. age 43 born May 1857 Ohio, parents born England
Phare, Kate age 47 born November 1852 Ireland, parents born Ireland
Phare, Thomas age 77 widowed, born England November 1822, parents born England  immigrated in 1853, naturalized

1860 Census East Cleveland
Phare, John age 36 born England
Phare, Arabella age 39  born England
Phare, John age 10 born England

1870 Census East Cleveland
Phare, John age 46 born England
Phare, Arabell age 50 born England
Phare, John age 19 born England

1880 Census East Cleveland
Phare, John age 56 Carpenter born England
Phare, Arabella age 59 born England

Thanks,
Audie443

Interesting Audie,

There is an Ann Hyne in the area in 1841, not with family aged 15. (Though I must say there is a Mary Hyne with some children in the area.)

Hope someone can help with the Bratton Clovelly Baptisms.

Whites Directory 1850

http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/BrattonClovelly/BrattonClovelly1850.html

Here are some possible connections from the 1841 and 1851 census

PHEARS Mary Ann 11 Y

1841 UK census has many shortcomings. Neither relationships nor marital status are given. Adult ages (persons over 15 years of age) are rounded down in 5 year lots therefore the three aged 20 we would expect were born 1815-1821. POP is not listed only if a person was born in the County or Not. There is a columb for persons born Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts, where normally the initial is used to signify which....S - Scotland, I - Ireland or F - Foreign Parts. In this case the enumerator has placed a Tick in this columb for Peggy, Walter Samuel and James but does not signify which is correct.

In case it connects here is some Cornwall info.

Thomas PHEARE of Bratton Clovelly Devon = Peggy COBELDICK 16 Oct 1811 by licence St Mawgan in Pydar Cornwall Both Signed. Witnesses John Cobeldick and John Phear

Baptisms Cornwall Parents William and Peggy

Walter PHEAR 31 Mar 1822 Tresmeer
Samuel PHEAR 14 Mar 1824 Tresmeer
James PHEAR 5 Mar 1826 Tresmeer

So looks like these ticks in 1841 re born Scotland Ireland or Foreign Parts are not significant

Peggy COBLEDICK baptised 11 Jan 1789 Mawgan in Pydar Parents John and Mary

Looks like they married in St Eval

John COBELDICK = Mary VYVYAN 27 Dec 1776 St Eval

Looks like they had 3 children in St Eval before moving to Mawgan between 1781 ands 1783

I have found new info that would with some luck confirm that William had a sister Mary.  I found a Mary Phare Garland buried in William's family plot.  In 1880 Census Mary & John Garland  live next to William & Ann Phare.  In 1870 Census Mary & John Garland and children William (b. 1858) and Anna (b. 1862) live next to Thomas & Mary Phare. Mary & John immigrated with the children between 1863-69.  Hoping this also indicates that Thomas is a brother also, or perhaps a cousin.

The birth date I have for Mary Phare is May 1814.

I also have a marriage license for Thomas Phare at the age of 68 which lists his parents as Richard Phare and Grace Vickel.  From marriage license of Henry T. Phare, son of Thomas, Thomas' first wife was Mary Short.

Is there any information available on the Children of Richard Phare & Grace Vickel that would perhaps prove whether or not William & Mary were theirs? or perhaps children of a sibling of Richard's.

Death information on William Phare and Mary Garland is not easily accessible to confirm parentage.
