GULLET/GULLETT
« on: Saturday 22 September 07 08:37 BST (UK) »
Interested in contacting people with an interest in this name. My family apparently started in either France or the Low Countries and the first instance found in England was in 1544. The family settled mainly in Devon and I have traced a direct line back to 1600. Would do lookups in my large database and any additions very welcome. So far have only found links in the USA to those who emigrated in the 19th century from England. Others went to Australia, South Africa, Canada and New Zealand.

Anne

Hello Annie,

I have a large collecetion of Gullett's in my line dating back to the mid 1600's. I too have contacted branches in USA, Canad, South Africa and several parts of Australia.

Just today I have finally sorted out a confusing marriage.
Sarah Gullett  born c 1835 Plymoth to Thomas Gullett and Elizabeth Edgecombe.

She married William Willie in South Australia c 1851/2 (source death certificate of William Willie 1888) William and Sarah also married in Victoria in 1863!!!

They had Lucinda Elizabeth Willie c1853 in South Australia who married Sarah's cousin Henry Gullett in 1872. (We thought a 9 yo bride would have been most unusual) The earlier SA marriage sorted things out a bit

Hello,
I am researching my ancestry (Edgcombe in Devon/Cornwall) and have reached back with certainty only as far as c.1800.
I have been provided with the name Margery Gullett who apparently married Thomas Edgcombe born abt 1632.
Any light you could throw on this would be very helpful, regards, Ed.

Hi Ed,

While I have information on Gullett/Edgecomb it is much more recent than the dates you have. I have some information on one line of Gulletts back to John Gullett and Dorcas Hammicke who married in 1672.

I have no other inforamtion on this generation so I don't know what siblings this John Gullett had or who his parents were.

Good luck

Ed,

A quick look at the IGI suggests that Margery/Margeria Gullett was the daughter of Richard Gullett and Marie of Ugborough Devon.

There is also a possible  entry of her marriage to Thomas Edgcombe.

Hi Robyn,
Thanks for the info re Gullet.
I am coming to the conclusion that I may have lost my way searching around the 1650s and further back and will have to pursue a different lead.
Thanks again, regards Ed.

I am looking for the ancestors of Sarah Jane Gullet who married John Jones and had a daughter Bessie May Jones in Salford in 1913.  Trawlng the census leads be to believe that she was born in Bristol in 1877, that her father may have been John and he may have come from Torquay in Devon, but this is circumstantial. Can anybody verify I have made the correct link?
