John Jackson - Birth Cert
« on: Friday 28 September 07 21:39 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I was wondering if there is anyone out there that could help me.

My ancestor John Jackson was born in Washington in approx. 1849-50 the only thing is I don't know where the best place is to look to confirm his d.o.b. I wondered if anyone out there knew of any useful sites.

I know he married Bridget Steadman on 05/07/1871 in Liverpool and his fathers name was Thomas Jackson.

If anybody can help it would be really appreciated.

Many thanks

Penny :)

Hello, Penny,

Washington State??   Which was part of the Washington Territory until 1889 when it became a State.

If Washington State, you might start at Cyndi's List

http://www.cyndislist.com/wa.htm

OR

Washington D.C. ???

1860 US Census --  2 young John Jackson's   in District of Columbia  but neither with father named Thomas.   Closest match is John age 11 w/ parent Nathan and Lucinda.  This family is Black.

Here's is the District of Columbia site

Hi Lissa,

Many thanks for your info.  I am not sure whether it is Washington State or Washington DC all it said on the 1881 census was Washington, America.

I will have a look at both of these sites and see what I can find.

Thanks again you have opened up new avenues for me.

Regards

Penny :)

Don't know if this helps, but here you go.....

Oregon is directly below Washington State

1860 Federal Census:
Thomas P. Jackson  age 41 Clackamus County, Oregon   Upper Mollalla Pct

Thomas P. Jackson:  farmer, born in Pennsylvania
wife Ann age 36  born Kentucky
dau. Mary age 16 born Illinois
dau. Susan age 14  born Oregon
son John age 12  born Oregon
dau. Ellen age 10 born Oregon
dau. Louisa age 8 born Oregon
son Albion (sp?) age 6 born Oregon
son Joshua age 3  born Oregon
son Columbia age 6 months. born Oregon

Do any of these names look familiar?

karen

Hi Karen,

Many thanks for your reply.

Thomas Jackson was a farmer but I do not know the name of his wife or any other children.

John Jackson is around the right age when the census was taken so he could be related.

Is there any way I can find out when he came over from America?  I know he came over by ship and it docked in Liverpool.  I don't know if he came over as a passenger or a member of the crew.

Many thanks for your help.

Regards

Sorry, but I have no way of accessing that information from my location.  If I find anything, I'll contact you.  Wish I could have been of more help.

But, I did look ahead at the 1870 census and the 1880.  John is still living with the family on the 1870, but cannot find him on the 1880.  Did an advance search and looked for all John Jackson's born in Oregon for the entire country- nothing came close.

Hi Karen,

John Jackson did marry in 1871 in Liverpool so I can understand why you cannot find him on the 1880 census. If is was him he must have travelled to the UK soon after the census was done.

Many thanks for your time and trouble.

Hi Penny.
I've just found this post and I have traced my relatives back to this place and time in Liverpool as well.
John Jackson and Bridget Steadman married in Liverpool in 05/07/1871. I reached a dead end a few years ago when I purchased a copy of their Marriage Certificate. I guess we may be related and I'd be very keen to know if you got any further tracing John Jackson back to America (or Ireland as I initially thought)?
Kind regards
Mark
