Hi Hazel

I was also wondering what they were... did they have insurance in those days ?  :-\

The fact that the ref starts with QS ...do you think that they may be quarter sessions?

deb... sleep tight  :)

Deb many thanks for all this. Yes the licenses for sale of liquor were issued annually at the quarter sessions so these will be worth a look.  I have seen the Removal of John Heard but think the most important part was missing as all that was in that folder was the certificate of lawful settlement. These were issued after a settlement examination giving the person the right to reside in the named parish in this case Beaford there was no mention of Yorkshire anywhere other than the title on the folder very strange ??? I'll get the other documents out next trip to Barnstaple many thanks again.
sorry not to have replied earlier have had very little time to breath this week lol

I have just come across this site whilst doing some research on Beaford where I own a property.

The Gunsmiths was a pub years ago but converted into a house and cottage many years ago. The main part is still owned by a member of the Heard family.

I live opposite Myrtle Cottage which is also mentioned in your postings. This is along St Georges Lane which is a bridlepath running parallel with Church Lane.

Living at the end of the lane which joins the Exeter Road, I am only a matter of yards from The Globe Inn (where I shall be for lunch in a couple of hours!)

I also know the Union Inn in Dolton quite well and know the current and previous owners.

If I can help in any way or anyone wants photos I would be happy to help.

Incidentally, the same Heard family own the village garage too and one of the youngest generation of Heards works in The Globe when not at college.

It is a small village and the locals are great at helping out with village history. I have lived here for part of the week for 15 years and know most of the old families here.

OK folks here we go again this time the pub is The Royal Oak Dalton.
It was kept by John FOLLAND and his wife Mary Grace nee LYNE in 1881Know John was the son of a mason and was still following this trade while resident of the pub but I would like to find how long he was the landlord
The pub was kept by an Eliz HEARD in 1850 I would like to be able to identify this Eliz as Heard is a family name
Any information about the Pub's history and a photo I can use on our web site would be very welcome

Hi there  :D

I suspect Eliza was part of the Beaford Heard family.

I am off out in an hour or so but will detour and take a photo of the pub for you and post it ASAP.

The pub has changed hands 4 or 5 times in the last 15 years or so but I will ask the present owners if they know anything of its history.

Come to that, we will be celebrating new year's eve in the Globe at Beaford tonight and some of the locals might know a bit more. Some of the younger members of the Heard family will be there so who knows?
