Rae/Stewart Marriage
« on: Monday 01 October 07 04:52 BST (UK) »
Looking for confirmation of marriage on 25 July 1849 for James Rae/Rea (born Ireland) and mary Ann Stewart (born Hull)   Have children's birth cert's with this date on but can't find marriage on Scotlandspeople and also on the 1851 or 1861 census for Hutchesontown, where the children were born.
The children I've found thus far are:-
Florina RAE born 25/1/1852/1853 Glasgow (witness John Rae)
Mary REAY born 20/8/1855 121 Rose St,Glasgow
John RAE born 29/1/1860 162 Crown St, Hutchesontown Glasgow
John Rae born 27/5/1862 74 Rutherglen ?, Hutchesontown, Glasgow
**James Stewart Rae born 3/11/1857 162 Crown St, Hutchesontown, Glasgow
** James married Elizabeth Agnes Bolton 31/12/1880 Kinning Park, Glasgow
Any help or suggestions very much appreciated.

Monica,
Many, many, many thanks for this info I am over the moon.
The fact that Mary Ann Stewart was born in Hull had made me wonder if she had perhaps been born enroute from Ireland to Scotland. To have her Mother on the census is great.
I know the spelling of the name was all in the interpretation of the enumerator but the family has carried on the spelling as RAE.  My Mother-in-Law immigrated to NZ with her family when she was seventeen.  Our son visited her birth place at 3 Walmer St, Govan & we have a photo of him standing in the snow outside the building, which has been restored.
Kind Regards,
Mel

Many thanks Sancti
I've come across James Rae & a Margaret before but not sure if they are our family.
Will keep a copy of the 1851 census you sent and see if in time they fit with the family.

It might be worthwhile looking at the original image of the 1851 census for this family posted by Sancti. It could well be that 'Margaret' is simply a mis-transcription of Mary Ann's name from the original entry. Everything else fits.

Hi Monica
I will check out the original and also the birth of Ann which I have not as yet found.  This was for 26 Rutherglen, instead of 74 but I know folk moved around a lot in those days.
Appreciate your help

Hi Monica

I checked the original 1851 census and it is definately Margaret & not a mis-spelling.

Did find on IGI a marriage for a James Rae & Margaret Gillon 10/7/1850 at Gorbals and also a James Rae & Margaret Stewart ain 1850 at Kilkirk.
Still haven't managed to find an actual marriage record for James Rae & Mary Ann Stewart on 25 July 1849 Glasgow.

Will check on Scotlands People and see if I can find a birth for their daughter Ann circa 1850.
