Dear Sheila,
This is so cool--my great grandmother was Jane (Jeannie as she was known) Blackstock. There are many Jeannies in the family. I know of Whiteinch as my mother took photos years ago of the row of houses where Grandma lived. Thanks for the history.
I don't know a scanner I'm sorry to say but he wrote that note at the end of the old testament on a page which was only half full of print, his writing has a bit of flourish it reads: James Cafry his watch No. 7(?)456 second line: Bought November 1, 1836 ...price symbol L under that 4 symbol s (under that 4, symbol D under that 0; next line Bought off Mr. Sprat Springfield.
Also in the bible were Glasgow Sabbath School Union, scripture Lesson Scheme, 1875 for the first quarter; another clipping was Bible lessons for the fourth quarter, 1866, Oct, Nov. and Dec. and Appeal in connection with Special Evangelistic Services to be hled throught the Glasgow Free CHurch Presbytery, The way of Life and the Way of Death. another Dowanhill U.P. Mission, Whiteinch, meetings on Sabbath (no date). No wonder we have ministers in the family! Jane Blackstock married in 1878 in Whiteinch and my grandmother's note written in 1971 said this was James Blackstock's bible--wondering if he spent time in Glasgow or he gave it to her to use.
Do you have much information on the other siblings of Sarah? From the oral history some died before adulthood, Wm Blackstock was lost at sea, Mary Stevenson Blackstock-do you know why that middle name, same with John White Blackstock. Does the name Matthew White ring a bell?
I have a photo of my gr-grandmother, as a young woman, she was pretty and plump and lived to the age of 91, buried in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Thank you for your information.
Jeannie
