Can anyone help with the birth or baptism record for Deborah Sampson
who married Thomas Battrick on 5.4.1790 at Church Knowle, Wareham, Dorset
Census record for 1841 indicate that the birth was around 1770.

Thanks

There is an interesting entry for Deborah Samson's baptism on         www.dorset-opc.com

"as she was deposed on oath"

The same site gives her marriage at Church Knowle as 5th April 1790.

Hi Nanny Jan

I'm not yet convinced that we are looking at the same person -
1) Can't understand the comment and the fact that in the opc record the womans name is shown first, which is unusual.
2) Can't trace marriage of William & Sarah
3) Name spelling quite different although I realise in those days spelling was dependant on who wrote out the register and their interpretation of the spoken name.
4) Distance between Piddlehinton & Wareham for the 1780's worries me.
5) I've been down too many wrong lines to take everything at face value

Hi Ray,

The Piddlehinton page on www.dorset-opc.com gives a name and contact email for the opc; she might be able to help you regarding the baptism.

Surname spelling does vary; I've been transcribing Dorset parish registers and spelling changes from vicar to vicar and sometimes from child to child.

Hi Ray

Deborah is one of my husband's ancestors.  It took us ages to find the record you're seeking but we eventually tracked it down through the Dorset branch of on-line parish clerk.  She was baptised in February 1770 (the exact date cannot be transcribed) in Piddlehinton.  Her parents are Sarah and William Sampson.
