Churches in Longford - Link
« on: Wednesday 24 October 07 20:27 BST (UK) »
Click for the Rootsweb Genealogy of Longford - Church Records.

At the present date the Corboy Presbyterian church is a small community of about ten families. The church was established in the mid 1600s. It was the first congregation in the county, which in its heyday boasted three churches, Corboy, Tully and Longford Town. Today only Corboy remains and it has two distinctions: It is the oldest surviving congregation in the Irish Midlands as well as being the oldest Presbyterian church in continual use outside Ulster. The 'From Ireland' © website of Dr Jane Lyons contains an article which may interest those RootsChatters whose ancestors came from Co. Longford. It's title is "The Presbyterian Exodus from Co. Longford in 1729" by Thomas J. Barron which was published in Breifne.

Longford is a Cathedral town and is the seat of the Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise. Saint Mels Cathedral and Saint Johns Church both date from the 19th century. The town is located within the Church of Ireland (Anglican/Episcopalian) Diocese of Kilmore, Elphin and Ardagh.

Hi Brian,

Do we have to use RootsWeb's search facility to find the link?

Hi Christopher,
Guess I should have tried the link again before posting it. It was back in 2005 since I last used it.

Same link has now been posted by Tootsiepie.
