McCulloch, Newry Co. Down?
« on: Friday 02 November 07 01:47 GMT (UK) »
For more years than I care to remember, I've been banging my head against a brick wall due to my McCulloch Family.  That was until a couple of weeks ago, when a lovely lady contacted me with a shared connection, and, a sledge hammer for my brick wall. ;D ;D ;D

I knew, like probably most west coast Scots, that most of my ancestry would end up (or begin) in Ireland.  The 1881 Govan census told me that, but my new found relative could tell me WHERE. Newry Co.Down.  ;D ;D

It would appear that the family had a construction company, and  according to 'family lore', they won a contract to build a hospital in the town.  The story goes  that, due to spiralling costs brought about by new safety rulings, the family were bankrupted.  Hence the move to Scotland.

Now to the reason for the above epic , can anyone help me with this family?   Does anyone know anything about this hospital?  I couldn't bear another brick wall, for the sake of my sanity, please, can anyone help? :'(

  Hi Christine,
Newry General Hospital, know as Rathfriland Hill was opened in1838.

Another hospital in Newry is called, Daisy Hill Hospital. This hospital has been rebuilt in the last 30 years but I can not find a date fot the original building.
  Cheers,  Sam.

Hi Sam,

Many Thanks for the speedy response and taking the trouble to have a look for me.  I spoke to my new found relative earlier today, and she gave me the name Daisy Hill too.  So, Daisy Hill it is.  I'm  off to investigate and I'll keep you posted. ;)

Again, Many Thanks,

Christine. :D

Hello rye470,

Has your McCulloch family any links to Crombie or Carson?  I have an Elizabeth Crombie from Lackan and Rathfriland Co. Down, who married a Thomas Carson in 1873 at Rathfriland.  Her parents were James Crombie and Margaret McCulloch, who married in Drumballyroney in 1846.

Hi Nina,

Wish I could help but I've absolutely no idea.  I know nothing about my McCulloch's beyond their originating in Newry, and I only found that out a few weeks ago.

My GG Grandparents were William McCulloch and Margaret Weir.  Both William and Margaret were born around 1832/1833.  According to their death certs.,William's parents were David McCulloch and Susan Smith.  Margaret's were James Weir and Ann Carlyle.  Beyond that,  a  huge, black, empty void.

My g.grandfather, William b.1864 was a son of William and Margaret. His second marriage was to Ann Johnston b.1865 in North Uist. Their daughter, Winifred Margaret Weir McCulloch was my mothers mum. They all lived in Govan.
Don't know if that is of any use.
