"Completed" Institution in Gartmore, Perthshire.
« on: Monday 05 November 07 05:56 GMT (UK) »
Elizabeth Ratcliffe Hamilton died in Gartmore in 1908.  Had been "put into" a "Home".   Her three children also put into a home, probably round mid 1890s.  The family were living in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire.
Cannot find the children or James Hamilton's death.
Was there an institution in Gartmore as on her death certificate states a Guardian. Annie

Hi Annie,

Don't know if this will help, but Gartmore has a heritage society website
 http://www.gartmoreheritage.org/

I looked at the death cert and see that Elizabeth Hamilton nee Ratcliffe was 41, a pauper lunatic, and the informant was Lizzie Brodie, guardian, present at death, so it does seem to suggest that she was in an institution.  Have you found Elizabeth on the 1901 census to find where she was living then?

Would you like to post more details of the children and husband so that we can help further?

Thank you for that link, I had tried to find a library but didn't get anything.  Family I am following is:
James Hamilton B1859 in Airdrie
Elizabeth Ratcliffe B 1867, D1908 in Bathgate.
Children:
Alexander Ratcliffe Hamilton B1886, D1887
William Hamilton B1888, in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire,
Catherine Coyle Hamilton B1889 in Cambuslang.
Mary Gilmour Hamilton B 23/6/1891 Cambuslang.
The story handed down was that the mother and children went to a home.  1 child died there, 1 was adopted and went to England, the other married into the Drysdale family in Falkirk, Stirlingshire.
I am not getting anything for the children on Scotlandspeople except the 1891 census in Cambuslang.
Thanks for your assistance, Annie

I've had contact with the Gartmore Heritage Society in the past as my Kennedy ancestors used to live there but they didn't seem keen to talk to genealogists and told me to go and look the stuff up myself. If you try them let us know how you get on.

No replies from Heritage Gartmore.   Will put this one on hold now as I would rather spend time looking for James Hamilton.
Thank you for your assistance, Annie

Reply received from Heritage Council.  Including information that the "big house" in Gartmore was a Institution at one time and called the "Asylum on the Hill".
From the death notice that Elizabeth had a guardian then she was probably living in their home.
Thanks for the assistance.

I stayed in Gartmore House a few years ago, the view was great but the decor and service wasn't that inspiring. There is a brief history of it here but its hard to keep track of all the recent owners.
